Answer:
Thank you for the question regarding the use of our product. The type of soil/mix is called potting mix. The reason for its use is that once it is moistened it will "wick" the water from the bottom of the planter up towards the seeds/seedlings/plants. Once again, thanks for your interest and enjoy the rest of the summer season.

It does not come with the soil, it does come with wheels you attached yourself, a plastic cover that goes over the dirt and you poke holes in it to allow the veggies/fruits to grow through, it has like a pole that goes in the corner which I use to pour water into, to get to the bottom. I did not use the plastic and my bell peppers and Honey Dew Melon plants are really getting big, no melons yet but I did Read More

Thank you for the interest in our product. This does not come with the soil, dolomite, etc. These items are easily purchased at any lawn and garden section. Once in use, though, they do produce fantastic plants that grow big and very fruitful. Once again, thank you for your interest and enjoy the rest of the summer season.

Answer:
No, you will have to purchase your desired type of soil and amendments. If you will be planning to grow plants that thrive with caging or support, you will also have to add those pieces. I recommend holding the cover on with rocks or office supply binder clips; the rubber band included might hold on for a couple of days...

Answer:
No. It is the unit, wheels, inside grate and black plastic cover and rubber band. You purchase soil and all additives plus plants and/or seedlings. I would advise using twine or rope to tie the black plastic cover into place. The rubber band will break within a day or two.

I am now using the garden bed, with great success (two Giant tomatoes).

Alas I have lost the original user's manual. Is there an online site, where I can download that needed manual? I want to duplicate my results next year.

They could provide already cut slits, or offer a sponge type cover that can be cut to specific needs. TP Read Less

Answer:
I had a problem with the elastic band also. Mine broke first week. I took twine and tied it around the black plastic cover. I mentioned the elastic band in my first recommendation. The unit is nice, but the design to use a black plastic akin to a trash bag, should be replaced with a more reliable better fitting snap on/off molded plastic lid that allows for plants to come through.

Don't bother, Chez2. Based on what reviewers said about how ineffective the bands were, I didn't use them at all. Instead, I used small metal clips I had. I'll bet binder clips (from an office supply store) or clothes pins would work just as well. Good luck!

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome for beginner I'm a beginner to gardening. I planted tomato, peppers and beans so far and they're growing really well. I didn't plant from seed, I got the small plants from the local home depot stores. Pictures attached are photos taken at Day 20. See more information here: http://thefamilyoflove.com/container-gardening-little-pickers-2-day-10/ May 18, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I love my patio garden I saw the patio garden kit on The Chew and purchased two of them the same week! I bought my starter plants and soil at HD as well. After letting the kits and the plants sit for about two weeks, I planted them and the results thus far have been amazing. I'm growing tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant, green peppers, basil and rosemary. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Amazing! We are in rental property now & building a home, so we can grow now & move later! Fantastic little growing pot. We are moving soon, so can start plants now & move with us. Love that they are portable & able to use year after year. Slightly heavy after all is in, but worth the opportunity to be able to start the plants now, gets us ahead of the limited grow season here in Colorado. I will also use these in Florida, to keep the dirt confined due to the saltiness of gulf air. Vegetables & herbs both seem to like this & you can reuse the dirt for several years & just add the nutrients to beef up the potting mix. May 31, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great tomato planter I can never seem to get my tomatoes to grow properly and my friends are always over abundant. Her secret.....using these grow boxes. My tomatoes have no fruit yet but the plants are large, deep green and the healthiest looking plants I've ever grown. So looking forward to the harvest as there are already numbeous flowers on the plants! June 7, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to assemble The directions require a moist layer of "potting mix" but no potting soil. Also dolomite was needed and took a bit to figure out what that was. Otherwise assembling it was quick and easy. So I let my 5 year old do most of it. A mallet was needed for him to lock a few parts in place. June 7, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect balcony size This has been the pefect size for me on my apartment balcony. I have planted two tomato plants, and two zucchini (both are 'patio' varieties that won't grow quite as huge as standard plants, though). I believe the instructions said that I could plant up to 6, but I don't want crowding. I did not use the plastic cover/rubber band, after reading that the rubber band tends to dry out and snap. I am using my own mulch instead, but I DO actually use the tube that sends water to the bottom of the container, which has really helped my plants a lot. I hear the full system is most effective, of course, but I didn't want to have to deal with bungee straps or duct tape to get the cover to work. The only thing "kid themed" about it is the turquoise color and the fact that the instruction manual has more kid friendly images. Otherwise, it seems to be exactly the same as the standard City Pickers. I read some other reviews that the casters gave people issues, but mine popped right in with a snug fit and have given me no trouble. May 31, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very Easy to use I bought four of these since I never seem to be able to grow a garden and thought raised beds would be better. These are small but great for porch growing. So far I really like them. I only planted two so far each with three tomato plants and some pepper plants. They are not dead yet after a week so I must have done it right. lol The instructions were easy to follow and if using all the correct supplies as stated in the directions I know that my plants are getting all the nutrients, fertilizer, and water they need to grow big and strong. I can't wait to harvest some tomatoes. April 26, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by We shall see...... Planted 6 cherry tomato plants. Have lost 2. Hopefully the rest will flourish - too early to tell at this point. Set up was easy. May 17, 2016
