Can I use in the garage?

My garage roof is the floor of the up-stairs of my house. Can I use this as an insulation between the garage and the house to improve warmth in the winter in both locations and cool in the summer or is this an attic only insulation?
Asked by: Richard
Dear Richard: Unfortunately the answer is NO. Reflective barriers are effective under a hot roof in summer, which radiates infrared energy. Cold cannot be 'reflected', so radiant barriers do not work in the winter. Home Depot sells other insulation products that will be effective for your garage, e.g. foam board and Roxul rock wool. The most effective option is: DOW TUFF-R Model # 268441, Home Depot Internet # 100322376 Store SKU # 163832. Tuff-R provides R-6 per inch of thickness. You can nail or screw the foam board panels to the bottom of your floor joists. Be sure to carefully seal all of the joints and edges to block air leaks. DAP 230 is best for small gaps. The 'Windows and Doors' version of Great Stuff foam works well for larger gaps; the cured foam remains flexible to stop cracks as things expand and contract. In a garage, however, foam board MUST be covered by a thermal barrier (1/2" drywall) because it is very flammable. Roxul rock wool is non-flammable with R-4 per inch of thickness. Just like foam board, nail or screw it to the bottom of your floor / ceiling joists. See: Roxul ComfortBoard, Model # RXCB11224, Home Depot Internet # 206789748 Store SKU # 1001748089 If you do not want to install a finished surface on your garage ceiling, e.g. drywall, Roxul also makes a version called Rockboard that is available with a white poly or silver foil facing. You can order it through your Home Depot's Customer Service or Pro Desk. Ask for Roxul Rockboard 60. It installs just like foam board. If you live in an area with cold winters and want to boost the insulation, fill the joist bays with Roxul Comfortbatt before you install the foam board or Rockboard. ComfortBatt is much denser than fiberglass and provides R-4 per inch. See: Roxul Comfortbatt Model # RXCB351525 Home Depot Internet # 202090820 Store SKU # 974419 I hope this is helpful. Mark

can this product be used with vent channels?

I want to know if I can use this with vent channels such as Provent by ADO? If so would it go over or under the channel?
Asked by: Donald
It would have to go over the provent channel but I don't think a provent should be used in conjunction with the radiant barrier. An Enerflex panel over the provent would restrict the air flow thru the soffit vents. Check the Enerflex website and Youtube for correct installation.

Can it be used in Windows to keep out hear

Asked by: Liz
Dear Liz: NO! Reflective / radiant barriers are not recommended inside windows because they can overheat and distort the frame, e.g. in vinyl windows, and damage the seals in multi-pane windows. The best option is to block the heat of the sun before it enters your home. Fortunately, Home Depot sells a number of effective products you can install yourself, e.g. Coolaroo Model # 460051, Home Depot Internet # 203304038 Store SKU # 766454. Search the Home Depot site for "outdoor shades" to see all of the options. I hope this is helpful. Mark

Can this be used in the floor joist's above a crawl space to do the same? Keep the cold from the ground coming through ?

Does it also work in a un-insulated garage in the rafters ?
Asked by: Twinstates81
Dear Twinstates81: Unfortunately the answer is NO. Reflective barriers are effective under a hot metal roof in summer, which radiates infrared energy -- but cold cannot be 'reflected'. Home Depot sells other insulation products that will be effective for your crawl space, e.g. foam board. The best option is: DOW TUFF-R Model # 268441, Home Depot Internet # 100322376 Store SKU # 163832. You can nail or screw the foam board panels to the bottom of your floor joists. 16 in. x 4 ft. Radiant Barrier (50-Box) is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Seems to work... The temperature in my attic is noticeably lower +/- 20 degrees. Relatively easy to install but can be a challenge in tight spaces (at the low end of the rafters). It took about 12 hours of work to install about 1000 sqft. (200 pcs). Had a little trouble because the last 10 pcs in the box didn't have the wires (that hold the panels in place) in them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product was easy to install... We just completed installing 800 pieces of this product and it was very easy to install. We have already noticed that our heating system seems to be running less and our house is warmer as a result of this product. We hope that next summer we will experience a good result in reducing the heat in our attic and saving on our electric bill.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy install Though I had to wait for cooler weather to install, we are pleased with the ease of installation, trimming, etc

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Material is harder to put up than it looks Panels have two stiff metal rods that are suppose to hold the panels in place but they are hard to bend into place . Especially in a confined attic

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to Install Enerflex is a very durable reinforced radiant barrier. The two metal rods in each panel hold the panel in place between your rafters. It was very easy to install.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from ok ok for the price inconsistant quality, cheaper material than my first purchase
Date published: 2013-05-14
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great material, Poor labor working quality The material itself on each sheet seems reasonable nicely of the price, BUT, each piece has different length and width (some 1-2" longer/short than standard indicated as 16"x48") and the layout alignment between the foil sheet not evenly produced.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy Install Radiant Barrier/Rafter Vent Easy to install when rafters are on 16" centers and the rafter bay if free from obstructions - and you have access. Two steel flex wires cross horizontally at 1/3 and 2/3 up the length that spring into the rafter sides. Obstructions in the bay may require some cutting of the product. I would not recommend adding any rolled insulation, as the installed product forms a non-rigid half cylinder shape in the bay that would be difficult to cover without crushing the shape. Also air space and clean shiny surface improves performance of radiant barriers. Good: +Easy to install. +Priced competitively +Doubles as a rafter vent. Keeps hot air close to roof deck, away from living surfaces. +Skipping installation in areas where you don't have access doesn't reduce performance in areas where you can install the product, since this is not an air seal. Therefore install it in areas where you have access; skip crawling into god-forsaken areas of your attic. Bad -Assumes 16" on center rafter spacing, with few obstructions. -Sometimes the spring wires bend instead of spring. -Wires can tear out of product unless you install gently.
