Seems like no one wants to provide the R-value. Do you mind doing so please. A civil engineer asked > a month ago. Than

Asked by: JustAGirl
I doubt that it has much R-value at all. It is very thin material, much like tin foil with a slight fabric flexibility. It is designed to reflect the sun's light.

What is the r-value? Is this appropriate for internal or external insulation of metal duct work?

Asked by: CivilEngineer
Dear CivilEngineer: Sorry for the delay in this reply. Enerflex and similar reflective / radiant barrier products do not provide effective insulation for HVAC ducts. They have almost zero R-value by themselves; the advertising claims are based on an air gap that you must build / create. This air gap provides almost all of the claimed R-value. It would clearly be difficult / impossible to build a sealed air gap around HVAC ducts. Home Depot sells other products that are effective for HVAC ducts, e.g. Masterflow Model # INSWRP60, Home Depot Internet #100152008 Store SKU #363984, which provides R-6. To boost the R value, just wrap the duct with another layer. Be sure to use foil HVAC tape, not silver fabric "duck" tape. See: Nashua Model # 1207792, Home Depot Internet #100030120 Store SKU #915245 I hope this is helpful, Mark

How difficult or easy is it to cut? Will sissors or utility knife work? Is it difficult to cut a straight line?

Asked by: Longplay
Very easy to cut with scissors. It is very light weight.

Will this reduce the life of your roof shingles?

Asked by: Mrich
I do not believe this product would generally be used in a roofing application. I do not think it would provide any substantive benefit. It is principally intended to be used to reduce the heat coming through windows by reflecting the sun's light.

24 in. x 4 ft. Radiant Barrier (10-Pack) is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 20.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Radiant Barrier Install. I am a license Air conditioning contractor & have installed radiant barrier for only a few customers & the material I have used has always been in roll form measuring 4' wide & cut to length to install. Have a neighbor/customer who hired my crew & I to install the Enerflex Radiant Barrier that he had purchased. Not knowing what to expect w/ this new product & only familiar w/ the barrier on the roll I scheduled 1 1/2 days to complete & we were done in less than 1 day. Installation was easy & moved quickly. We finished up late in the day & as w/ the roll barrier noticed the temp' difference in the attic just as well. For installing we did use a staple gun to secure pieces more securely w/ a staple in each corner even though most likely not needed but would rather not have any issues w/ possible loose pieces & call backs. The only issue we did have w/ the installation was not to the radiant barriers fault but to the fact that not all carpenters can maintain the 24" centers as the product requires between the rafters & in the case where the span was wider the staples secured the product amply. Tools I would recommend are as noted a heavy duty staple gun, heavy duty scissors to cut the barrier & plastic webbing when trimming to fit & a pair of wire cutters for cutting any of the 3 steel rods as well. Good luck w/ your installation & would use again over the roll material for the rafter installation only as it is not perforated as is also noted on the products instructions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from good heat-reducing product for existing home Our neighbor was the first to install the Enerflex radiant barrier by himself. Observing and finding it very easy to install especially with 2 people we also purchased enough for our attic when it was on sale. We're all in our 60's. Walking out from under a 20 span we'd completed, I could feel the difference in the temperature. I just went up in the attic to snap the photos, yeah it's hot up there, this is Florida, but the heat wasn't blasting down the attic stairs as in the past so I expect a minor drop in the electric bill. Most beams were right on 24inches. A few needed some stapling. Not that I'd install it for this reason, but from a woman's point of view it does look more finished.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Cheap at least Used for garage door insulation primarily for heat as live in Texas. Does not seem to be reflecting heat as promised. Maybe 25% - 35%. Also very difficult to cut the wire reinforcing rods built in. Not as advertised. Sure there is a better solution & will keep looking. Good Luck

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Works in limited application This radiant barrier is very hard to cut because of the heavy wires that run through it. It can't be done with a utility knife but requires a clipper of some sort. If your job conforms perfectly to the 2 x 4 FT. panel size then you might have a good thing going but if there is any cutting and fitting to be done I would stay away from this product. The mylar film does tear too, which is not good. I did not find this product to be user friendly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great, easy, keeps the attic cooler This is sooooo easy to DIY! We are not really "handy" homeowners. We got a lot of our attic done in a hurry. We underestimated the amount we needed (not figuring in roof pitch) and are still trying to get more. I don't know why it's been "out of stock" for so long. We could tell a difference with only some of our attic done.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible product, inferior to alternatives This is the worst radiant barrier product I have worked with. The panels lack reinforcing on the long axis. The film tears very easily. There are cheaper and better options that have rip-stop or tough material. Get a roll of radiant barrier and cut it with scissors or utility knife and staple it on. Faster and does a better job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Value on this Radiant Barrier for my Garage Door I purchased this as a "daily special" from Home Depot. Installation was easy but I had to hand cut for my panels on the 16 foot Garage Door and used 3M double sided tape to attach here. Works great especially since my door faces South so I get lots of Sun & heat here. This was a great value since this was discounted as a daily special and I will purchase again if I see this on special for my new Garage going up now. Thanks Home Depot!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from not enough info for me. Needed more information about the installation in my workshop not my house, so tried to contact the manufacturer but they would never get back with me. I installed them but would use something else if I had to do it again. As it is still extreamly hot in there. Maybe a little more info would have helped.
