Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Stove, Great Heat, Great Price, Great Savings First, let me give you a brief idea of where we live and our house. We live in Northern Vermont and the winters can get rather chilly. We live in a colonial style home built in 1900. It is roughly 1,650 square feet with blown in insulation and it needs new doors and windows, which will be a project for this year before winter comes again. We have owned the home for about a year. I purchased this pellet stove in January 2013 after our 25+ year old forced hot air oil furnace died. After being frustrated keeping this beast of a furnace running and dishing out $$$ for oil, I figured I would seek out alternative heat sources, while I gave our furnace a much needed overhaul. (Furnace now works great, but only used for backup). So after heating the house this winter, I figured I would write a review on our pellet stove for those that might be interested. In short, I purchased this 2,200 sq. ft. Englander Pellet Stove and haven’t regretted it one bit, details below: INSTALL: EASY! The hardest part was moving the stove into place on the stove board, and making sure the required clearances from the wall and edge of the stove board were to code for a corner install, other than that it was smooth. We cut a hole through the wall for the stove vent and for the air intake (which is required for this unit). If you know your way around a drill, reciprocating saw and hole saw, there is no reason you cannot install the vent kit and stove yourself. Just follow the manufactures required clearance and you should be all set for both safety operating the pellet stove and for insurance purposes. I had a dedicated outlet/circuit installed for the pellet stove. I do not believe this is required, but I did, my father is an electrician so it only cost me the materials. VERY IMPORTANT: USE a surge protector for the outlet, you never know what will happen and it’s a cheap way to protect your pellet stove! HEATING: It does a great job heating, if you find the right pellets. Obviously my experience with pellets may be different than someone else’s, so please keep this in mind. When I bought the stove from Home Depot, I bought a ton of Green Supreme Pellets. They were ok, but the stove was not putting out as much heat as I anticipated. After burning a ton of these (no pun intended), I switched to a brand of hardwood pellets called Ambiance and WOW what a difference! The heat these pellets put out were amazing, there were hardly any wasted pellets (or clunkers) and the glass on the front of the stove stayed fairly clean for days. My only complaint with heating is the heat/air output. Don’t get me wrong, it pushes a lot of heat out, but I assumed it would reach all ends of the house. Now this will vary from home to home and how/where the stove is installed. It heats the living room and bedrooms just fine. The dining room, kitchen, laundry room and bathroom stayed cooler than the other parts of the house, but this was because of air flow due to my home. For this coming winter I will be installing corner fans in the doorway of the dining room and kitchen to help move the air towards the other end of the house. On really cold nights, I stuck a metal fan on top of the pellet hopper (cool to touch) to help blow the heat coming off and out of the stove around. This seemed to work very well. I would usually keep the house around 75 degrees on a setting of medium to medium high on the stove. PLEASE keep in mind; it will take you a little bit to adjust the feed and blower rate to something that is comfortable. This will also vary depending on the temperature outside, your house and the wood pellets you are using. WARNING: If the power goes out, there is a risk that smoke will enter your home. This happened a couple times, but nothing extremely dangerous in our case. Without power, the fan that forces the smoke out, stops, thus creating a situation where some smoke may exit the stove into the house. I think the smoke traveled from the firebox, through the auger system and out the hopper. Both times this happened, the house did get smoky, but after placing a fan in the door and opening a few windows it was cleared up within 20-30 minutes. CLEANING: This stove does need to be cleaned out more than the competition, but it only takes about 10 minutes a day (with the method I used). My cleaning method was a little unorthodox once I got comfortable with the stove and how it worked. In the mornings before work and upon coming home from work, I would hit the ‘OFF’ button, wait for the pellets to stop feeding and the flame to cease, use pliers to take the tray out (still very hot), place the contents in a galvanized bucket and then bring the bucket outside away from the house. I would then put the empty tray back in place, hit the ‘ON’ button and let the wood pellets feed into the tray and let the auto-ignite do the rest! I did this method because 1) I didn't have to do a full shutdown which could take 20-30 minutes and 2) I didn't have to let the stove completely cool and then shovel out or vacuum the ash in the chamber and tray. I would keep the pellet stove free of ash and the only cleaning I had to do was the tray itself where the pellets burn. With this method, the stove never fully shut down, but it didn't seem to mind. PELLET STORAGE: I stored the pellets outside on the porch, covered from outside elements. I used the pallet they came on the keep them off the ground. They are easy to store inside and outside, just make sure if they are outside you cover them with a piece of plastic/tarp to prevent water/snow from penetrating the pellet bags. MISCELLANEOUS: One thing I noticed that after a winter heating with the pellet stove it does make some creaking sounds (augers), but a good clean and wipe down of the augers clears that right up. The DVD that is provided with the pellet stove is great, shows how to break down and clean the stove, how to install it, etc. Very beneficial to a first time buyer. Parts can be ordered through Home Depot or England Stove Works, Inc. Not that I have had to replace anything, but if I did it would be very easy with the resources provided on the DVD and the manual. Last, but not least: Overall, the stove was a good investment. On a very cold day/night, I would crank the stove up and go through a full hopper (60 lbs. or a bag and a half). It paid for itself in the first year alone. Our home is estimated to use 1,000 gallons of oil a year. I bought 350 gallons last year, 250 gallons of that was without a pellet stove. The other 100 gallons (minimum that would be delivered) I bought was for our hot water heater and for oil heat back up when we would go on long trips and the pellet stove would run out. I bought 3 tons of pellets total, which cost me around $720, about $220 cheaper than ONE tank of oil. Last time I filled our oil tank, my CASH price was $940. My estimate is I will go through 5 to 6 tons of pellets for a full winter, so approximately $1,400 in pellets versus $3,800 in oil. Does not take a rocket scientist to do the math. My electrical bill increased about $20-25 per month with the stove, but this was a small price to pay for a nicely and cheaply heated home. I would highly recommend a/this pellet stove to anyone looking to heat their home in a cost effective manner. Install was easy, upkeep is minimal, and a nice glow from the fireplace is nice on those cold Vermont nights. June 25, 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Not totally satisfied The good side, well made construction, very nice looking, easy to setup if your mechanically inclined. one bag of pellets (40 Lbs.) last around 18 hours. The bad side, fans are noisy, a lot of excess weld splatter, no way does this heat 2,000 square feet!!! my house is 1700 square feet and so far comfortable but we have not hit the cold weather yet. My old wood stove would blow us out of the house. October 25, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by works great Bought this stove over a year ago and installed myself. Did everything book said, dry run etc., lightly sanded the hopper, sprayed pam on the hopper sides, wiped off the excess, and let it dry, as a couple other previews suggested, and fired it up. It has 9 heat settings,1 is low, 9 is high,1st problem I had was it would burn thru entire hopper, (60 pds), in 22 hrs and shut down. Ran it for a week this way just to make sure. Called cust. support, (Englander), and they talked me thru resetting the feed rate, now on a setting of 1, stove would go out because feed rate was to low. Called cust support again and they talked me thru resetting feed rate, now it's perfect. This is the 2nd winter I've run this stove for heat, using premium pellets, and love it, I have a 1400 square ft. house and this January has been really cold, last week 18 below zero at night, "warmed up" to 12 degrees daytime. Highest heat setting I had to use to maintain 72-75 degrees in house was 5. We are only using a bag a day, sometimes less. The wife and I shut it off everyday, and once the fire is out and fans shut off we vacuum the ashes and chip out the creosote before we dump a new bag of pellets in, and start it back up, which is actually over kill on cleaning, but what the heck. Only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that once in a great while the upper auger will stop turning for some reason and the fire will go out, which entails getting all the pellets out and finding out why auger jammed. Cannot stress enough, if you want the best performance out of ANY pellet stove, you HAVE to use a premium brand of pellets, or you just won't get the heat out of them that you should. Happy with my purchase, and would have no problem with buying another one. January 17, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This stove is as reliable as the sun coming up each day Purchased this stove 13 years ago and have never regretted it. I live in the snow belt in upstate NY where winter comes and stays. I have gone through one exhaust motor and one window gasket. The exhaust motor took 2 days from Englander. The exhaust motor and blower motor make a bit of a whine after all these years. This stove kicks out major heat. It is the only heat in my 1800 sq ft home and I have never had my stove up to 5 ( it goes up to 9). Its usually set to 1 or 2 and 3 on very cold days . Every 3 yrs I take the motors off and clean them up & lubricate. I would recommend this stove to anyone. I wish everything was this trouble free. My hat goes off to the people at Englander. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A great purchase & ownership experience We bought this stove in 2005. It has been the main heat source since in an old, drafty, uninsulated 1785sq/f story-and-a-half block house since purchase. We love it. Great heat, little maintenance and only two issues since purchase. First, there is a vacuum hose that attaches to the exhaust blower. Expect to replace it every three years if you use the stove heavily. Second, the lower auger broke this March. After placing an order online, the company called to tell us they would take care of it under the long-expired 5-year warranty. You can't beat that kind of customer service. Bottom line: American made, backed up by super people, reliable, extremely cost-effective. We're recommending this stove to friends as a truly good value. March 30, 2013
