Can this stove be inserted into a wood framed, factory-built metal fireplace?

Asked by: Grog
No, In the hearth industry sometimes this question has a gray answer but the installation manual from this wood insert states "DO NOT INSTALL THIS UNIT IN A PRE-MANUFACTURED FIREPLACE!!! FOR MASONRY FIREPLACE INSTALLATION ONLY!!!" I have many years of experience in the hearth industry and if you run across a manual, stove manufacturer and/or sales rep telling you "yes you can put a wood insert into a pre-fab fireplace" ask them if the insert you are looking at has ever been factory tested in the make and model of your existing fireplace and the answer will always be no. I recommend looking into pellet or gas inserts. You could also invest in a high efficiency pre-fab wood burning fireplace.

Installation was fairly straight-forward however at first we did not know that we needed the flue pipe to go all the way up the chimney! We thought we could just pop it right in the fireplace, haha, dummies. Anyway, we spent about $200 on elbows and pipe. The blower works great, the noise doesn't bother me, as some other reviewers have said. It's a fan, man. It hums. I get it cranking in the morning and I can get about 1,100 square feet from 64 to 72 in about an hour, with the damper fully open. Free heat! I think this beauty will pay for itself in one season. I installed it halfway through February and my gas bill dropped immediately. Wish I would've installed it in November! When dampered down a couple large logs will burn for a good few hours and keep the temp between 70-72. I'm rating it 4 stars and not 5 because the back plate doesn't line up well with the bricks of my fireplace, there is about an inch gap and the predrilled holes for the bolts are too tight to make any adjustments. I am eventually going to tile over the bricks and I have not yet figured out how I'm going to close the gap. The glass door is quite large and when the fire is kicking it's very nice to watch. Super stoked!

We just now finally used the insert and it does the job with our bedroom doors closed, in an almost 1700' house. We just have to learned the flow of the dampener slide.

I've yet to come up with a quieter option but still looking. Other than that it works great! We have a very poorly insulated lake cottage in upstate SC and it keeps the place very toasty (and more importantly keeps the electric heat from constantly running). I recommend cutting your wood in 12-14" lengths so you can stack it in the firebox in both orientations, but it will take logs up to 20" if you carefully maneuver them into the firebox. I also recommend buying a pre-insulated chimney liner, and also removing the glass door and firebricks while moving and maneuvering the unit into place. The glass door stays very clean and provides a nice ambience. You will get a little soot on the glass at times but it easily wipes off with a damp paper towel (don't do this while the glass is hot!). Very pleased through the months of November and December.

It heats the great room we have it in to a real toasty temperature, and you can feel the temperature in surrounding rooms raised as well, eliminating the need to have baseboard heat on. Fan does not have to be on all that much, as it radiates more heat than you think it would without the fan. Also, the glass stays much clearer than I would have thought, despite looking fairly cheap. I am super impressed with this little unit, and it has a hot/slow burn, even with the damper closed, which will let a collection of well seasoned wood last a lot longer than my older fireplace.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bought for our 3 bedroom Rancher After have 500 dollar electric bills in the cold PA winters, we had enough. We purchased this stove, and couldn't be happier! I love it, heats my entire house in no time! The blower is a little noisy if on full speed, but a little noisy blower or 500 dollar electric bills, that's a no brainer! Fits decent size wood. Has a smaller fire box but puts a lot of heat off! Love watching the fire and cold pa nights! Well worth the money.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from nice for the money I got estimates of $3800.00 to $6500.00 for an insert to be installed so being the handy man I am researched DIY options. Bought from Home Depot because I wanted a return option in case it didn't fit. Installation was not too bad, did the whole job for $1500.00 and about 5 hours of work. Insert seems solid so far, once the fire gets going it really heats our living room real good. Still messing with ways to get heat into other rooms. Wood burns completely, only lite ash is left which is easily removed. Only complaint is blower is noisy at higher speeds, I generally run at medium level so that's not an issue. For the money you can't beat it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Stove Have a 2300 sf home it heats the first floor without any problem. Winter here on long island is mild but tempertures at night reach into the teens, The stove kept the first floor a nice 71 degrees, which is about 1400 sf. Burn time on stove set at medium gave me a burn time of 7 hours with coals left to start a morning fire. Installation was easy and custmer service at englander stoveworks was very helpful.
