can you pound on the head of the axe

to help driving it into the wood? i used B3-3LB Estwing drilling hammer to drive it at times and it appears to mushroom the end of the axe somewhat. The handle of the axe is short and it seems it could use more power and better aim with a hammer driving it once it's wedged in the firewood ...

You can pound on the head to drive it through wood. Pounding will not hurt this tool.

Mine did not come with a leather sheath. Did yours?

Is there some place that I can order the leather sheath from?
Asked by: tedor
Unlike axes, splitting mauls rarely have sheaths.

It now serves next to the log splitter. Among other uses, the hammer head works wonders for getting stuck wood off of the splitter head. For some reason, Home Depot stopped stocking these at retail locations. This is an excellent tool for splitting stove size wood for kindling or just smaller pieces for easier fire starting. The tendency is to use this tool one handed; While it can be used that way, this tool lends itself to two handed use quit nicely. The metal is ductile, so pounding it with a sledge or another hammer is not a good idea as the head will mushroom over time. For splitting smaller pieces of wood, I usually position the axe on the wood and lift both wood and axe and 'drop' or drive both together in a controlled, slow manner. The large head mass either splits the wood outright or gets it wedged in the wood. In the latter case, a swing with the wood finishes the job. I find this much safer than swinging at a at small piece of wood precariously balanced. I'm still mystified as to why Home Depot stopped stocking these in the stores. Especially so in the Northeast in the Fall / Winter seasons. Out of all of the small axes I've used over the decades, this is by far the best one I have used for splitting small wood. I can easily split six inch Norway maple with this provided there aren't many knots in the wood. In truth, most wood over three inches goes to the log splitter, but the new maul serves mainly in kindling making. Yes, I did buy a second one for use near the stove wood pile...

It takes little effort to split logs or make kindling and you will never have to replace another broken wood handle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Packs a punch My buddy has one of these and suggested I get one. It's solid metal so no dealing with broken handles. 4 pounds has some good weight to it, but not too heavy.....you can swing it rapidly without tearing your rotator cuff. It makes kindling really easily out of logs and it is just big and strong enough to split good sized logs if need be. Really happy with it and would get one if you have a fireplace or wood stove. It took me 10 minutes to make a whole bin of kindling.

Well made metal handle doesn't chip or splinter as a wood handle commonly does. The handle also aids in splitting when your aim isn't exact. The weight of the head makes one handed operation easy yet creates enough impact to get the job done. A must have for anyone with a wood burning stove or fireplace. This was a gift for my son after owning one myself for over a year. Made in America was a nice plus.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great Tool - doesn't meet my need Good tool, well made. I was hoping to use this as a wedge - blade side doesn't cut as expected when using it with a maul. Ultimately it's well made, just hadn't met my expectations when it comes to splitting logs. Doesn't pierce as a standard axe blade would.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesomeness This thing is awesome! Works great for slivering fat lighter and oak kindlin for the fire. Can also work for driving a splitting wedge in a pinch, or if you have a sledge, you can use the Fireside Friend as a splitting wedge.
