Can this be used on a vinyl gate? If so, does the gate have to be reinforced internally so the vinyl doesn't break?

Answer:
HI SalalGal,
The spring is designed for wooden gates, to use it on a metal gate it would have to be welded on.

After installing, how do I set and LOCK the spring to the right tension?

The bottom bolt is locked in by the inability of the bolt to turn against the bracket, but the one marked "Top" has room to move, which I assume is proper because you can set the right tension. But how to lock it in? There does not seem to be another piece to accomplish the locking.

Answer:
Hello Shaymana,
This is designed to be self locking. By turning the top hex nut (no more than 3 turns clockwise max) with a wrench it will stay in place by itself. No locking pin needed. See instructions on package.
Thanks for the inquiry.

Customer Reviews

Rated 2.5 out of 5 by 2 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Works well. The gate spring mounted easy and looks good. Tension was easy to adjust. I've read reviews and breaking is a problem for some and that can be shown to be from over tightening. A half of a turn is all it needs I only did 120 degrees and it works great. June 27, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Very Poor Design Wow! Save your money...Installed the first one, which requires drilling holes in gate and it broke after less than 1 rotation on the tensioner. Tried a second one, had to add more holes because the second unit was about 1/2" longer than the first...same result. Returned the broken parts. May 15, 2016
