Customer Questions & Answers

Can product #512254 be used with overhead sectional doors with extension springs?

The #512254 product description specifies its' designed to be wound around a torsion drum.
Asked by: Trash
I cannot confirm that this product will work with a torsion type spring for a sectional garage door (the description may be incorrect). But I can confirm that this is the proper cable, more correctly referred to as a "lift" cable, for sectional garage doors with extension type springs. I used it on my 7 ft sectional metal door and it was of proper length, as is, with no modification of cable whatsoever. I also had a lengthy on-line chat with Home Depot customer service, to let them know how poor the web site description was on this item, that it needs to include a reference toward extension type spring systems, and use the term lift cable as well. Funny thing is, the only diagrams on the actual packaging of this item at the local store shows a garage door with extension springs, and only a single brief mention of use on a torsion spring garage door.

on product number, 512-254, why do the instructions specifly retieng loose cable end when both ends of product are already looped

Asked by: john
because these cables and "Universal" and some installs do not need, or allow, loops at both ends (such as mine). So you must tie them puppies up to anchor the cable...otherwise, you have a pretty cool trebuchet.

Most home owners have 7 foot doors, I have 8 foot doors. I do not know anyone who has a 12 foot door.

I find it difficult to believe that these cables are designed for 12 foot doors. Since a cable goes around a pulley and makes three passes across the span, I suspect that these are 12 foot cables, not for 12 foot doors. The previous answer does not convince me either way. Sorry, I'm still confused.
Asked by: Rody
They won't work for 12' doors... you probably need custom cut cables...

What size doors are these cables for? My door is a foot taller than average doors because I have a boat. 12 FT. GARAGE DOOR EXTENSION CABLES (2-PACK)

Asked by: Rody
These are for a 7' tall door even though they are marked 144". That is because they go from the bottom of the door to the top & over a pulley where they go down the horizontal track & over the pulley on the spring & back again to be tied off in the area of the first pulley. That cable ends up traveling almost 12 linear feet when you do your final tie off to the track. Now, the door could be 12' wide but not tall using that cable. This style of spring set up is becoming less & less used due to function as well as safety issues. Torsion spring set ups are the way to go if possible. All springs are dangerous & could kill you, but torsion springs are contained & less likely to hurt someone when they break.

12 ft. Garage Door Extension Cables (2-Pack) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wicked Awesome and Made For A QUICK Replacement!! I had to replace my bottom lifting brackets and noticed that my 200 year old cables looked like a Sumo Wrestler had been bungee jumping with them...frayed and about to pop! Luckily, my local HD had these puppies in stock! The only issue I had with these was that my set up is so darn old...I think Ben Franklin installed them originally, that I had to chop off one end. Since I don't have bolt cutters, I used an old pair of handheld hedge trimmers...yup...it worked....after about 20 minutes on each cable, but worked none the less!!! After a foul mouthed session of cutting off the end loops, and good ole YouTube, I put those bad boys in like a semi pro!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product with slight exception.... The best part was how quickly I could get it from Home Depot! Great! Problem- the loop on the end was very much too big, and slid off twice. This necessitated another round trip of 30 miles to get the clamp to reduce the size of the loop. The length was perfect and the strength continues to hold my very large garage door!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not bad 12 feet was a bit too long. Vendor should make 10 feet and 11 feet versions as well. Door end loop was too big should make small loop. Fixing was not a problem. Working fine.
