Answer:
It starts automatically, You run your condensate hose from the AC unit into the pump, and there is a switch inside that will turn it on/off at preset levels and pump it away

Answer:
It turns on when there is enough water to lift up the float switch and complete the electric circuit to start the pump. It stops when the water is pumped out.

Anyone know where I can buy the check valve? Ours broke and our local home depot doesn't carry the part. I don't want to replace the entire pump. It works just fine.

From the looks of it, this is a DiversiTech CP-22T. Here is a link to the check valve at DiversiTech's site

Answer:
Not really but if the pump fails and you have connected your HVAC to the pump via the wire & connectors provided, it will shut off the 24 volt supply to the HVAC system and the system will no longer operate. NOP = no additional condensate = no water damage.
On my system you can tell when this happens because the programmable thermostats will go blank when the 24V dies.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works as it should When condesate moisture builds, it sends it outside of the house. August 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Saved me a lot of money. No High cost service call. Very easy to install. Very quiet when it is pumping out water. August 2, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Just a condensate pump. I was looking for a 1 gallon capacity condensate pump, but you did not have any. And also it was not obvious that a check valve is already installed in the pump. I spent a good while looking for a check valve and you did not have anything in stock or adaptable. June 28, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good product Sturdy and not too loud. Great item. Good price. Worth jt July 19, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by 120 volt condensation pump Bought this April 30th, and it quit working May 27th. I didn't think the pump was bad because it was less than 1 month old, but after paying $90.00 for A/C service call I found out it had quit. Due to the failure I had a hall and one bedroon with damaged carpet. This thing was JUNK, and if Home Depot wants to sell JUNK like this made in Vietnam They have lost a valued customer. May 28, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect replacement for existing pump. This pump was used to replace the original condensation pump installed with the HVAC unit in my hall closet. The original pump was 15 years old and I decided to take a preventive step to replace before it quit. The installation is straightforward and the instructions are clear. It was a simple swap of the new pump for the old one. Just remember to clamp the drain tube out of the old pump to prevent any backflow from the drain line. When installing the drain tube from the evaporator you will want to ensure that the tube in is cut at an angle per the instructions and that it extends to the bottom of the tank. This will create the best pickup from the tank and maintain a sufficient level of water to prevent it from pumping dry. I had an overfill cut-off on the previously installed pump and this was a direct connection to the Everbilt . The built in check valve is a nice feature and so are the indicator lights. My old unit did not have these. The pump is pretty quiet. That is nice due the mine being in an interior closet. June 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Value for the Price Was not sure about this when I bought it. But it was cheap. Just plug in and it was working. And, the best part is that it is silent. I check on it every now and then just to make sure that it is operating. Very nice for minimum hit on the wallet April 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good purchase Good pump for the money. Woks great. I have a10ft. ceiling and 30 foot to opening in house to drain. Pumps out water smoothly and quiet. Like the size of this pump. I was limited on space in my drain pan. I have had the pump about two months. Very please with the pump. I would recommend this pump highly. April 10, 2016
