Customer Questions & Answers

How do I determine what spring I will need to replace the broken one?

Asked by: shark
They say to go by the color code on the end of the spring, but if yours are rust-colored, like mine were, go by the thickness of the wire. If you don't have a micrometer, you'll have to guesstimate, but when you get the new springs home, compare the weights of the new and old springs. If the new ones aren't as heavy, they're too thin. Take them back and get the next size up.

Stiffness question

This is related to an earlier answer: "The 130lb spring has a stiffness of 2.35 pounds per inch." Since the max. extension of 42 inches (67 - 25), and the force at that extension is 65 lb (half of the 130 lb load). Thus the calculated stiffness is more like 1.55 lb/inch. Don't understand why the answer is 2.35 above. My door weighs 120 lb, and I am wondering if I should go with the 130 lb springs.
Asked by: Glenn
Two springs share the load. One spring carries 65 lbs and the other carries 65 lbs, or 135 lbs total.

The trick is where they must attach to the supports for the garage door. This varies from door to door. It is important to get springs capable of handling more than the weight of the door. I have now replaced 3 of 4 springs for my two doors due to failure of the original springs.

Perfect Yellow Replacement Springs for My Garage Door My garage door just would not open more than a couple of feet. These Everbilt Extension Springs (Yellow) with Safety Cables were just what the doctor ordered. While at Home Depot I also purchased replacement pulleys and extension cables to complete the update. I first watched an installation video online and went to work taking my time and being safe, finishing in just a bit over an hour and a half. The springs and cables fit perfectly and the installation went much more easily than I expected. Everything aligned and fit and attached perfectly. I'm happy and my garage door opens and closes like it's supposed to.

Installed 2 sets - easy and worked great. 16 months later - completely worn out. Door falls like there are no springs at all, opener overloads and shuts off. Light use, one door doesn't even have a car behind it. Pitiful - what kind of metal are these - zinc?

But watch out, this 130lbs springs is for double garage door. I tried on my single garage door, and it would not close all the way due to its tension strength. I had to return it for 90lbs, which worked perfectly.

So much less expensive than having a new door installed. Since I do not have an automatic opener the new springs make it easier to open and close the door.
