how do i know if my rheem hot water tank takes a fold-back element or a strait

Rheem hot water tank, MODEL NO. 81V40D D 240/208 40 GAL 4500/3386 i HAVE NOT TAKEN THE ELEMENT OUT
Asked by: BOOG
Your hot water tank will use any heating element i.e. High Watt Density, Low Watt Density, Ultra Low Watt Density. The difference between the 3 is the materials that are used to make the element. Any density of element should work, the determining factor is what type of water you have. The Low and Ultra Low elements out perform in hard water and can reduce the amount of mineral deposits you get inside the tank itself. They also do not get as hot (more surface area) as the High Density elements which should allow them to last longer. Heads up though the Rheem Marathon series appear to come standard with these elements.

Being low watt density does this mean it will save you money compared to a normal watt element

Asked by: Digadee
No. The high density or low density just means how much heat it will produce per square inch of the product. Low density/watt will not run as hot and therefore last longer because it attracts less limescale. The high density/watt models run hotter and attract more therefore giving you a shorter life span. They're cheaper but don't last as long as this model.

Hour one of use so no long term review. Just a heads up though: By all definitions I could find on-line, these elements are actually Ultra Low Watt Density. This is not a bad thing given their price point! It would be good however for the package to list such on the front instead of the back in small print. With their price, I thought I was buying Low Watt Density elements. Turns out, these elements are the very best type you can buy for an area plagued with "bad water."
