Customer Questions & Answers

The outer metal rim of the drain keeps coming off after a day. What am I doing wrong?

I have installed 2 of these and both times the metal outer rim of the drain has come off a day later. To be clear the drain itself is still sealed with plumbers putty and doesn't leak, it is just the metal rim/trim part. The first time I think I overtightened it but the second time I only tightened by hand. Any idea what is causing this or any help would be greatly appreciated. I have tried to stick it back on using Silicon adhesive.

Is this made of ABS plastic?

Oatey stainfree plumbers putty cannot be used on ABS plastic.
Asked by: OldMan
Yes you are correct. I would use 100% silicone on ABS. Without the part number I can't tell which unit you are referring to but likely it is not ABS and you can use Stainfree Plumbers Putty.

Can this be sealed with plumbers putty on a cultured marble vanity top? What should I use?

Plumbers putty says not to use with plastic or marble.
Asked by: OldMan
Again, you can use STAIN FREE Plumbers Putty or 100% Silicone. Regular Plumbers Putty is petroleum based and can cause staining.

We went into HD and asked advice how to replace the broken drain in our master bath. The attendant handed us this one and said "this is what you need". I asked what was the difference between this and metal and he said "this will work just fine". In some scenarios that may be the case, however I wanted to take time to share our experience so that you may benefit. It installs and fits as intended, but it wouldn't tighten things down so that it would not leak. No matter the tightness, it continued to leak around the plastic nut and the ballrod. Standard sink, plummer's putty etc. standard install. In our opinion, you do better with a metal product. We returned this (HD was quick and easy to return) and picked up a metal one. Installation the second time with a $20 metal one was flawless.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from sink drain pop-up assembly Replacement part went in as hoped. Replaced the broken sink tailpiece and popup assembly with this one piece plastic unit. The visible drain parts are actually plastic skinned over with a thin layer of metal so should hold up to cleaning just fine. Do not tighten nut too much or it will fail as the tube and the nut is plastic. The placement of the gasket on the drain ball pivot is important to assure a leak free assembly. the curved cut edge of the gasket must face the ball with the square edge going in the bore first. Gasket-Ball-Nut. Not too tight.
