Answer:
The strike plate is included with the ball catch. I don't know if you can buy just the strike plate.

Answer:
There is no rule of thumb for optimum spacing, the ball catch would need to be adjusted for your specific application.

Rated 3.0 out of 5 by 5 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Simple device when you Use it in the right spot. I have a closet that I don't want to lock, because the kids don't get that it isn't a good idea to lock them selves in closets. The door I have is mortised for the antique skeleton key lock sets. I got the ball catch and installed it in the door casing and got dummy handles to go over the existing holes. The door might rattle, sometimes you have to push it closed. Not too unlike a "passage way" door knob. August 16, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Everbilt Ball Catch Poor Quality I have purchased and installed two (2) ball catches. In both cases, within a month both failed when the ball shot from the threaded barrel due to the crimped end opening. I would not recommend this product! August 9, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to install, interesting design but poor quality I purchased the adjustable ball catch to replace the old ones from few closet doors that were not closing properly anymore. I struggled a bit to remove old ones at first, I put the new one into place but when I used for the first time the ball popped out from the casing and there was no way around fixing it other that returning it to Home Depot. I don't recommend the product. Unfortunately there aren't many options in the store. Eventually return it and buy one that seem ok. July 31, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Manufacturing problem Purchased two of these. I needed to return both as after a few days of use the balls popped out. The problem, from what I can tell, is that the lip around the cylinder intended to hold the ball in were malformed to be too shallow. June 19, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works well! My old door catchers no longer worked. These work just as well and were easy to install. My doors don't need much to stay shut so I didn't need to adjust these at all. I'm planning to buy more to replace my other catchers. February 18, 2015
