Customer Questions & Answers

Does galvanized steel hold up better than solid brass?

Asked by: OldHomeFixer
No, I doubt it. The galvanizing is probably cheaply done and the steel under it will corrode. That's why they don't use galvanized water pipes in houses. Use brass or stainless inside your toilet tank.

The instructions are too small for me to see. How do I put it together?

No question about the two bolts, but where do the four rubber and four metal washers and four nuts go?
Asked by: Scotty
Kevin, No, you don't use rubber gaskets to connect toilet to the floor flange.

Wrong picture on package and different directions given?

The wording on the instructions for the kit seem to be correct but the picture is definitely for the BOWL TO FLOOR package, which is SKU 097, I think. Also not clear is the fact that you attach a nut directly on the outside of the tank with no washer? (According to the package, which I re-read through, you put the rubber washer inside the tank and the first nut and metal washer outside the tank.) Then you use the second set of metal and rubber washers per bolt on the outside of the bowl? The Toto toilet I am replacing this on just used one rubber washer inside the tank, no nuts in the middle, and a metal washer and nut on the outside of the bowl.
Asked by: Jacob
First, I would NOT buy this unless the bolt is solid brass and the nuts are brass or stainless. Galvanized will probably corrode and you won't be able to get the nut off if you ever need to. If you do buy it, you don't need 4 nuts. Put the rubber gasket on the hole in the tank. Place the metal washer on top of it. Put bolt through these two. On the outside, put the rubber gasket on the bolt and push it up to the tank. Then put the metal washer on. Screw the nut on the bolt and tighten. Be careful not to over tighten it. It will probably work with only the inside rubber gasket, but the outside one is a good cushion between the metal and the tank.

The picture is for the installation of the toilet bowl to the floor flange, not for this product which is for attaching the tank to the bowl. Also the instructions on the package differ slightly from the on-line instructions (picture there also of the bowl to floor flange). I was also confused of why there are so many washers. I couldn't find a Home Depot associate who could explain the installation process. I will go ahead and learn on my own and go slowly to install.

It works but the spud gasket is a lot looser fit than the original and the instructions are minimal, it leaked on the first installation and I wound up going onto the internet to find out how to install it properly. Two basic tips, one is to install the bolts and gaskets to the tank and with the tank OFF the toilet put some water into and see if the bolt gaskets leak. If they do tighten in stages the bolt nuts until the leaks stop and then install the tank to the bowl. The other tip is to EVENLY tighten the tank to bowl nuts. Flush the toilet and if the spud gasket leaks then evenly tighten some more, repeat until the spud leak stops. Without doing step one first it is difficult to impossible to tell where the leak is coming from if you have a leak after installation like I did.

(I removed it to install some bead board.) I started the job and found the existing bolts, from the same brand kit, were completely rusted out. They were only in there for three years. To remove the old bolts, I had to cut the nuts using a rotary tool. Anyway, I used the rubber washers from this kit, and bought stainless steel hardware to complete the job.

The head on the bolt is 10/16" and while this satisfies the fit through rubber washer it would secure much better if it were 13/16" to more adequately prevent a leak. Also the bolt I used from this package began to rust in the tank within two months.
