This kayak is freaking awesome!! I've been doing tedious research on buying a kayak for a few months now... looking at brands, styles and of course, pricing. For under $750, you can't find a better kayak than this Sun Dolphin Excursion. This is no joke. (Also, make sure to buy it from Home Depot, as they are cheapest here). I bought the yak from home depot a month ago and was finally able to get it out on the water for the first time just a few days ago. Wow! This kayak is a beast!
It tore up the water so easily and smoothly, this yak quickly gained speed by paddling just a few times and then would glide so smoothly across the water. I felt like I was riding in a Cadillac. The yak is also extremely stable and did not wobble on its own, unless I intentionally did it. Otherwise, it was as flat as paper and I felt safe the entire time. The yak also had great self direction and would not deviate off course by itself. It kept a sturdy direction most of the time, unless I dropped the paddle in the water on accident or something. The yak is not heavy, but not light. It definitely needs two people to carry it, because it's so large in size. You could carry it alone, but you may bend something important - it is made of plastic. Lol.
With regards to the cockpit, it's pretty comfortable. Some people complain the seat isn't great after a few hours, but I'm 22, and 3 hours of yaking is good. I tend to pull over after that to grab a drink and stretch... then I'm good for another few hours. People need to remember, kayaking isn't about being comfortable. You're floating on a piece of plastic, usually in the middle of nowhere. Any seat is better than no seat. (You can also purchase "better" seats for $50+ and swap them out, but that's a whole other topic. Lol)
Unbelievable storage capacity. This is another reason why I wanted a 12ft kayak, because my brother and I plan on going camping alongside rivers and need more storage space for our gear. Towards the front of the yak, known as the bow, there is a great deal of space. On the top side, you have straps to hook on gear on top. Below, infront of your feet, is a good amount of space for storing other gear. I like to store all of my stuff in dry bags, as to ensure the gear absolutely stays dry. A couple 40L bags fit quite well inside the bow. Very satisfied. Towards the stern, the back of the yak, you have straps and a removeable tow feature. The black container is waterproof and floats, so you can tow it behind your yak! Awesome! So what I would do, is remove the container and tow it, then you have straps and you can put even more gear in the rear! (And if the river has too many rapids or low water passes, I wouldn't want to tow, so I would just not take the container and only stuff the yak with what I can).
This specific model, Excursion, also is equipped with fishing equipment, not much, but some and it's pretty useful. In the cockpit of the yak, you have a swivel fishing rod holder. It's kind of in the way and bothersome at times, so I tend to remove it every now and then. I may end up just moving the whole thing at some point and remount somewhere else. Behind the cockpit, you have two static rod holders, which can also be used for fishing nets, other poles, etc. View the pics.
This kayak did not come with a paddle, from home depot. Other retailers may include a free paddle, but remember, those are factory paddles and may not be worth it to use. I've purchased separate paddles for $30 from my local sporting goods store and they work very well. Just remember to use "drip rings" with your paddles to ensure you don't get soaked when paddling. I try to stay as dry as possible.
To end this lengthy review, I highly recommend this kayak, or the dark green excursion model. They are awesome and definitely worth the price. See ya on the river!

I was pleasantly surprised when I was researching this kayak and found such a reasonable price at Home Depot! When the kayak arrived it even came with a paddle that I had not expected. I've now had it on flat water three times. (Only caught fish twice.) It is light enough for me to lift it atop my SUV by myself. It floats and maneuvers well. The rod holders are convenient. There is lots of storage. My only wish is that the kayak was a bit deeper. When seated, I cannot have my toes pointing straight up. I feel that for the price, it is a good value and will meet my needs as a flatwater fishing kayak on small ponds, lakes, reservoirs and slow rivers.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Kayaker203 Excursion 12 ft. sit in Kayak. Awesome!
Kayak is really cool. It has several fishing pole holders and lots of storage space. Home Depot had the best price especially when you get free shipping. Other sites wanted big bucks. I have used the kayak several times in the bay and it handles great. No complaints yet. Just don't forget the added expense of a paddle, vest, roof rack and a few other items. Gets to be a expensive hobby quick. Overall I am happy I bought this boat.

Good kayak... shipped poorly is a plastic bag so new kayak arrived scratched all over. Came with paddles. Some screws missing and covers do not fit properly... Fun in the water.

I have always wanted to go kayak fishing and always wanted a fishing kayak. After gazing at the other side of Oneida River and wondering how many fish are lurking around at those edges and under those fallen trees I finally decided it was time to purchase a kayak. It was that or a bass boat. :P After doing some research this product stuck the most. Mostly for its price and size. After the first use, I was shocked to see that my butt was not hurting from sitting on it nearly the entire morning. The seat is comfy. The actual kayak itself cuts through the water like no other. I mean it could keep up with my friends touring kayak which flies in water. With the proper amount of strength you can keep up with this kayak. I like fishing rod holder(s); they did come in handy. I cant really find nothing wrong with this product except that a different color on this kayak would cost extra which made disappointed but I doubt that affects the fish. This product weights like a feather. I can easily lift it above my head and onto the roof of my car and that is after working all night. Easy to lift especially for a 12 foot kayak.
Once again, a great product for its size, money and quality.
Hope this review was helpful. I might re-edit this post with a Go-Pro video attached to my kayak. Have a great day.
