Hi Karen
Good Question. I would water down the red rocks prior to using this product, or better yet cover
them with some plastic to be sure. Hope this helps you out.

I followed the instructions (actually, a CD showing step by step). They showed and advised putting a cover over nearby vegetation. My deck is lined with plants on three sides (hostas, sawgrass, flowerbed) and I used a throwaway plastic drop cloth to cover them and had no problem. I don't know what the outcome would have been if I hadn't covered them; but I'd follow the directions and cover.

On a related note; I've now used this product twice. The first time I followed the instructions to a tee and had outstanding results. This year, I took some shortcuts and did not get the spectacular results I got the first time. Live and learn---FOLLOW DIRECTIONS.

Answer:
A cheap sprayer ($15 or so), a stiff(er) plastic brush--handheld or on a pole, plastic gloves, plastic drop cloth to cover plants around side of deck, and a hose (or power washer using the lower setting). Oh, a bucket so you can mix some diluted cleaner to use with the brush. That's pretty much it.

Answer:
You need to cover nearby plants with plastic, sweep the deck, then spray the cleaner full strength on the deck. After it sets it can be hosed or power-washed off.

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 144 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Expert Chemical Composite Deck Cleaner In ten years we never could get the deck clean and bright as the Expert Chemical composite deck cleaner did. We have tried many other products and even straight bleach-------nothing worked. When using other products, after all the hard scrubbing, the deck appeared better for only a few weeks. It soon returned to the dirty looking deck. It was very depressing. It looked so bad we didn't use the deck any longer After receiving the composite from Home Depot. we went right to work. The directions and video were so clear and the job so easy and the results so satisfying We have recommended the Expert Chemical Deck Cleaner to all our neighbors who have a composite deck and will continue to recommend it. thank you Expert Chemical. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I dont care what you read this stuff REALLY WORKS!!!!! I read all the reviews and bought this product. Followed the directions and used it. I actually bought too much and made the choice to do the scrubbing process twice because I have a light brown trex deck that I have not cleaned for about 7 years. The last time I used a pressure washer and some other product and could not see much of a change. So this year I said its time to clean it. The deck had mold and was nearly black and I dreaded cleaning it. I watched the video and decided to spend a little more money and give it a try. What I can say is WOW my Black Ugly Deck IS NOW THE ORIGINAL BEIGE color it was when it was installed. I used a pressure washer and it looks great. I now enjoy my deck and cook on it all the time. What I will say is it is strong and you may get bothered by this with smelling it after some time. I also have some painted areas on the deck sides and stairs it did wash that color quite a bit but I can repaint that. What I will say is it did what it said it would and I am very pleased with the results. There was also a strong odor left for about 2 days but that went away also. So my advice is this is worth the money and is a great product. July 15, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Finally - A Product That Works! Over the years we tried several different mold cleaners for our composite deck along with pressure washing. Most didn't work at all, others worked short term with the mold growing back fast and heavier. It got to the point we were ready to rip out the 5 year old, 400 sq. ft. deck and replace it with concrete. Although there are 3 application steps, you will see amazing results after step 1. In our case 90% was gone before scrubbing started in step 2. (Our light grey deck shows the mold best when wet.) I plan to use this product every spring because it really does make the deck look new again. May 10, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Made my deck worse, only did half of the deck I have a 800 sq ft deck, so I purchased 8 bottles for $180, plus a pump sprayer, gloves, scrub brushes, goggles. Watched the video and read the directions to be sure to get it correct. I split the deck into two parts, so I could follow the directions exactly. The part that I cleaned is actually worse than the side that I didn't clean. This product is a total waste of money. Do not purchase it. Returned the remaining bottles to Home Depot, but they would not refund me for the product that I used. Stay away!!! June 14, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Composite deck cleaner Worked excellent on my deck which hadn't been cleaned in 12 years. June 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very very satisfied!!! Have been looking for a product that produces these results. Very very satisfied with the results, the application, etc. Immediate results and the decking looks much better than it has for some time. I found it convenient to be able to let it dry in one area as I work on another and then come back for the second and third applications. Black spots disappear after first pass and the deck now has a slight sheen which makes it look newer. It has been difficult trying to find a product that is relatively easy to apply and quickly removes the mold, black spots, etc. They seem to be available for awhile and then are discontinued. I hope I can rely on and plan on this product being around year after year! I'm tempted to try their house wash now. May 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Wonderful easy to use product The product does exactly what it says it will do. My composite deck was dirty and had mold on it. This product cleaned up my deck perfectly. I just followed the directions from the enclosed dvd and had absolutely no problems. I actually had enough product to lay 2 extra finish coats onto my deck, which will help to prevent future mold problems. Great Product! June 8, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Worked like a charm... I found that one bottle more than covered our 10 X10 deck, stairs and rails for cleaning purposes. Not sure the second application is really necessary. I used what I had left, but it leaves sticky residue on the deck which my husband tracked into the house. I'm pretty sure it will wash off in the first rain anyway. It definitely has a strong chemical (bleachy smell) so it would be better to apply on a day with some breeze. May 31, 2016
