Answer:
I did. The manual says it could be surface mounted - but I don't see how. It wouldn't look very nice unless unless there is an add on kit. I have not seen that. you wouldn't want to do It this way. having it mounted in the wall is much better.

Answer:
Yes Nancy, this heater is designed to be recessed into your wall. But if you wanted to surface mount the heater on the wall (to keep from cutting a hole) you would have to order the "surface mounting frame" as an accessory.

I would like to install a wall mounted heater in my 2 car insulated non attached garage/workshop. It would operate in Chicago type winters. Would this unit be ok or should I go with something bigger? Electric is my only option.
Thanks

Answer:
The Smart Series 1500 watt wall heater would be too small for your application. Roughly calculating the room area you would need at least 5000 watts to heat the space. The FUH 54 unit heater is a 5000 watt unit with built in thermostat that would work for a garage application.

Answer:
No. but that depends on your installation. You need electricity where you will be installing it. if you don't already have power at the location you need to add it or have it added by an electrician. 12-2 with ground. Also will need screws - size depends on your installation. You also need tools to cut the hole in the wall

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.6 out of 5 by 15 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nice and warm This unit was easy enough to install. It required a drilled hole for the house wiring and a couple of screwdrivers. The remote unit is really handy; in fact, I use it more than the on-board touch controls. I will need to re-program it, which is somewhat tedious, as the weather changes. I override the program using the remote control unit. December 29, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by so far so good This review is on the installation part so far as it is too warm to use it right now. It went in relatively easy, however I am experienced in home repair and electrical. the hardest part was fishing the 12-2 romex through the wall. When putting the finish grille on, the top part hooks over the lip on the back box and the bottom is held on by 2 screws that go under the black finish piece. this took me a bit to figure out as the bottom didn't seem to snap onto anything. I did power it up and it appears working. the touch controls all work and I was able to set the date and time without issue. Programming the heat cycles will take a bit of trial and error. not sure when and what temp I want the bathroom yet. Will post again when I've actually had the chance to use it. Also for old construction - cut the hole so that one side of the heater is right against the stud. The directions state that it is ok to use a 4" wood screw into the other side to hit the other stud, just don't overtighten the screw or it will distort the back box. September 15, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Heats well but is annoying The programmable thermostat is a nice feature and is the main reason for purchasing. It is also quiet and not hot to the touch (small kids). We use it in our master bath which is on the corner of a large ranch house and had issues staying warm with the rest of the house. The only issue I have is that when it gets to the set temp, let's say 68 degrees. It constantly kicks on and off as the temp immediately goes to 67 when off since the heat comes out below the sensor. So it loudly keeps clicking on and off every 3-5 seconds which is super annoying. I'd exchange it or trade it for something different but what can you do when you have committed to the point of cutting a specific size hole in your wall? December 10, 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by On our third one... Redid a bathroom and wanted to put in extra heat. Loved the look of this wall heater. First one got installed and the fan didn't work. You could start it with a screwdriver, but the fan was very noisy. Returned it and got an exchange. This one, the fan worked but the touch panel did not work. You could turn it on and off with the remote but could not get to any of the programmable features, so back it went. Have my fingers crossed on this one, which is working, so far. But I am really annoyed to have to go thorough the time and gas for the extra trips to Home Depot. One thing I have to say is that customer service at Home Depot is great and we had no hassle from them. February 21, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by not much heat noisy We installed this heater in a small bathroom .i like the look of the heater but the performance is poor .On high it puts out little heat and the heater is loud .i would not purchase is heater again. May 5, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Works great I use it to heat a small bathroom in the mornings. Does not have the same effect as the old 1950s coil type heater that used to be there, but warms up the area good and not much noise. January 27, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by So noisy! I bought two of these for my bedroom. For a few months all was fine, and then over the last few weeks both units have started loudly clicking and then for random amounts of time (2 seconds, 20 seconds, 5 minutes) they whirr loudly and then more clicking before going back to quiet operation. They cycle like this for some amount of time (a minute, 10 minutes), and then go back to normal operation. The manual is useless, and I'm trying to get help from the manufacturer, but I think I'm going to end up ripping them out. They wake everyone up (even the dogs) when they do this and nobody can sleep through the night. We now turn them off (!) when we go to bed, which is really the only time we need them. Very disappointed. November 6, 2011
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Small Room Wall Heater I purchased this product about a month ago and installed it to replace an old bathroom wall heater that wouldn't shut off. The product was easy to install and has worked without any problems. I'm glad I didn't pay much attention to the other reviews that were so negative. It is a good heater and the instructions on how to operate it are easy to follow. It really heats up the small bathroom and the night light feature makes it easy to see what the temperature is in the room. The only negative is the gray color (I would have preferred white - found white on the internet but it was $70 more so I stayed with gray). The product is well built and sturdy. I'm very pleased with the purchase and recommend it to anyone looking to have a temperature controlled wall heater in a small room like a bathroom. December 24, 2013
