Customer Questions & Answers

What gauge wire is used to wire heater and size breaker

Asked by: lhangw
My problem with this is the clear understanding of what it calls for and what it needs. The Manuel from Marley Products calls out for 10 ga. wire, on the 1st page. The power consumption of the 1800-4000 watts & draws 16.7 amps. this is in the range for a 20 amp breaker & wire. that is a 12 ga. wire, now that being said it also only calls out using a 12/2 wire not a 12/3. Again confusing, why would you use the neutral as a hot and just pull a 3 wire to it? Personally i would like to see the manuel on this site that is attached to the product so i can install the correct wire & not waste $ on what i dont need

How hot does the unit get? By that I mean to be used in an area that small chidlren would be in.

Looking for something to put in a small but cold church hallway area.
Asked by: ALAN
Not hot. The fan runs and keeps it cool. I've never felt it hot on the front fins and my kids never have had a problem.

Smart Series 19 in. x 15-3/4 in. 4000-Watt High Output Wall Heater is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 23.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good secondary system Could be a little quieter, but on the whole a great system. Easy to install, fairly user friendly and a very good looking design. Using in a 400sq ft finished basement and will raise the temp from 60° to 70° inside of 10min

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Clean appearence, great features, good performance I installed this heater in the lobby of our small business to supplement our aging and increasingly unreliable rooftop HVAC system. I selected this unit because of it's clean look with low profile installation and relatively high heat output. The big bonus feature turned out to be the programmable timer/thermostat that allows the heater to turn on early in the morning before we open to bring the lobby up to a habitable temperature. The included remote control allows for quick and easy control from several yards away. It's very quiet when operating and maintains a comfortable environment in all but the most extreme cold weather when people are coming and going thru the front door a few feet away.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Decent heater - easy installation This review is for the Smart Series 19" x 15-3/4" 4000 Watt High Output unit. We are using this heater on a 3 season 12x17 uninsulated porch that we turned into a 4 season by adding heat a few years ago. Previously we had a fan driven 4000 Watt plug in convection heater out there and it did well, so we figured this would do the trick. I'll update the review when we hit the winter months. Today it was 60 on the porch, within 20 minutes it was up to 70, this thing cranks out plenty of heat. When I walk out the door (located across from the heater) onto the porch I can feel the hot air blowing on my feet from 15 feet away. Yes, there is fan noise, we are used to it based on our old heater out there. It is just as loud as an in room air conditioner, not really louder, doesn't bother us while watching TV. I mounted it very solid with 4 screws on the back then 2 on the side into a stud. This unit needs to be hard wired, Instead of wiring into the 20AMP plug in circuit I already had out there, I opted to tie into a 30amp circuit that was close by that I was no longer using. I used 10 gage wire from the junction box to the heater. 12 gage wire on a 20amp circuit would be fine, internally the heater is using 12 gage. It also recommends mounting 12" minimum from the floor, the whole porch is windows with only a 2 foot lower wall so I was only able to mount it a few inches off the floor. I'm thinking the 12" is if you were mounting in a room with combustibles on the floor - my porch has a concrete floor where the heater is.

I bought this heater for my 420 sq ft, insulated, detached garage in Chicago. I chose this over a baseboard heater because of the integrated digital thermostat, and I'm very glad I did. I chose it over an infrared heater because I wanted warm air to circulate through the garage rather than me standing under a heat lamp like so many aging french fries. I keep it set to 65º and so far it's had no trouble at all holding that temperature, even when its well below freezing outside. In fact, of its five power levels, it spends most of its time at its lowest power output just maintaining that temperature. The thermostat can also be programmed on a schedule, if you like. It does not run constantly, which was a relief. Sometimes while I'm in there working with it set to 65º, it will run for a while, then kick off for 15-20 min until the temperature drops below 63º or so. It's relatively quiet when running — that is, as quiet as I think one could ever expect a 6" fan to be. Installation was straightforward and the manual was pretty clear, although it does require its own dedicated 240V circuit in your breaker box. I have a dedicated box in my garage, so I was able to run a circuit through conduit just for the heater. That said, the fact that this requires some intermediate-level wiring installation might put it beyond the average DIYer's comfort zone. Free advice: don't screw around with the electrical if you don't know what you're doing. Better to be alive and cold than dead and even colder. That said, if you installed the enclosure and did the rest of the install, a qualified electrician would be able to hook this up for you relatively quickly (and inexpensively) assuming you've got room in your breaker box and your situation isn't otherwise complicated. My biggest gripe is that the plastic trim pieces at the top and bottom that serve as attachment points for the front cover (the steel panel with the vent louvers and the thermostat) don't align very well. The result is that the metal cover doesn't attach very well at all. Mine is attached to only two of the four tabs that are designed to hold the cover in place. So I'll have to finesse and re-fit it to get it to sit flush and secure. It's not a deal breaker, but between that poor fit and the relative uselessness of the included remote (and its pitiful 4 ft range), that's why this is a four star review and not a five star review. The good: • works very well — heats my garage quickly and evenly • runs as quiet as I'd dare hope • relatively easy to install (if you know what you're doing, otherwise just hire an electrician) • digital thermostat works well and is fairly easy to set up The bad: • the fit of the outer cover and its attachment points is not very good, so some adjustment, filing, or other fudging of the assembly may be required to get the outer cover to fit flush • the remote works, kind of, but has very limited functionality and such poor range that it's not really worth having
