Answer:
The installation kit (LXK) is not necessary but it is helpful to level the ladder before you secure it with screws. See the instruction video.

What is the width of the steps, not the frame itself, but the steps you are climbing up.

I have a ladder now which is so narrow that it is difficult to get boxes and other things through the opening, not to mention holding onto them while climbing up the stairs.

Rated 4.1 out of 5 by 42 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product Great product, much stronger and firmer than others that I've used in the past. I own 2 now and wold buy another if I needed a 3rd. June 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product I purchased 2 ladders to put in my new construction. Arrived undamaged. Very solid compared to others I have used. If you are short, getting the ladder to fold down is a challenge. I had to add a handle/rod to the 3rd section so that my wife can raise and lower the ladder. I would buy another if I ever needed one. May 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by The Mercedes Benz of Attic Doors Well built and solid. Door Seals tight when closed and locked, which is what I wanted. Pricey but worth it. May 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Quality attic steps at a reasonable cost Very pleased with this purchase. Ordered it online and it came in a week early. Was easy to install, and most importantly, we have eliminated the draft coming out of the attic. Because of the tight fit, it will also be a plus in the summer. February 16, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Terrible Quality Control The product is made out of thin cheap materials. Wood is thin and cracks very easily. Only held together with staples. I ordered it and 4 replacement and It arrived broken all 5 times due to poor packaging and quality. Do not waste your money. February 25, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great stairs Well built and easy to install. Delivery was real quick also. February 10, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Only time will tell. I was able to install it myself, but not an easy job. I had to take the stairs off the door and reinstall in the attic. I like the door because of the insulating, it is thicker and less likely to warp. One of the feet have cracked already and I will have to see how to get it replaced. I contacted the company before installation to find out where I could purchase the kit that helps in the installation of the door and I didn't get a response, so I am not hopeful. The door and stair seem sturdy, but only time will tell. I am recommending this because it is better than the other available options. The high quality Werner I purchased less than ten years ago, already broke. October 23, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Arrived broken I could give this product a 4 or 5 stars if it had not arrived damaged. There was no damage to the shipping container, so it must have been dropped on the side at the factory. I didn't have time to wait 2 or more weeks to get it replaced so I repaired the damage, made it stronger than original, and installed it. The weak part of this unit is the mitered corners, that is where two corners on one side were broken. I most like the insulated door and the gasket seal with twist lock. I had to cut 26" off the ladder because I only have an 8 foot ceiling. There was an entire booklet of instructions on how to make the opening in the ceiling and rafters that I didn't need, but no other instructions. November 8, 2011
