Questions & Answers

Is there a minimum ceiling height? Mine is 7ft 5 inches.

What other FAKRO attic ladders would work with this ceiling height? RO could be 22.5 x 54 or 25 x 54. Thank you!
Asked by: Richard
The minimum ceiling height is 7' 11", the maximum ceiling height is 10' - 1".

How much clearance is needed to unfold the stairs? Can't find that in the specs and the ladder will be going in a closet.

Asked by: Chad
Chad, Thank you for your question. LMS model with 54 in. long opening will need 73-1/4" clearance to unfold the ladder. This value is called projection (R) - please see specification link under Info & Guides. LMS with 47 in. long opening will need 65-1/2 inches clearance.

Did you find the steel steps to be heavier than wooden steps? I ask because I'm a female living by myself and I need to be able to pull these steps down and put them back up by myself.
Asked by: MissShopper
The steel steps will be only 10% heavier than wooden. The difference is insignificant. Perhaps you may consider also Fakro LST model for your attic ladder. It opens smooth with much less strength needed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fakro LWM Attic Ladder This Fakro model LWM attic ladder is exactly what I was looking for. After having my arm nearly taken off by the spring on my old attic stairs when a rivet let loose (second set in ten years) I wanted something better. Since everyone in my area (including the local Home Depot) stocked the same junk as I had before, I ordered this model on-line. After living with it for over a year I’ve absolutely no regrets. The hinge design is both sturdier and safer than the others I’ve had and the insulated door locks tight against a rubber gasket to keep your heat from escaping. Overall, the design and construction are far better than the others I’ve seen. Three minor caveats for someone considering this model: 1) The instructions are not the best and the adjustments are a little fiddly. I eventually had to make a few modifications to get the results I was looking for. 2) The three foot long rod that's used to lock/unlock the door has to be stored somewhere handy (offsetting this is there’s no pull-down rope hanging from the ceiling). 3) The painted steel steps are somewhat heavier than the typical aluminum or wood ladder and the treads are a little narrower at 3.2" (others are about 4"). The stairs are fine with me but my 5' 3" wife is afraid she’ll get knocked on the head while trying to unfold the heavy steps. I believe they also make a version with wood stairs but I've no experience with that model. When properly installed, I'm convinced this pull-down ladder will last as long as the house it’s in. I recommend it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great stairs, especially for a big guy! Ordered these after reading many reviews of many different manufacturers stairs. Let me start out by saying, I'm a big guy, 6'3, over 400#, so my concern was safety first. None of the stairs had a rating for 400#, most, like these, had 300/350. However I decided to take a gamble. Reading further, I saw that the directions for these, were poor, at best, based on pictures. I will definitely agree with that. Some better directions could help, although with what is included, my father and I got the job done. We had these delivered to my home, none of the issues that I've seen posted here with other delivery woes, so can't speak to that. Packaging was secure and intact, no damage. Came very quickly. Old pull down stairs out, new ones up fairly quick, installed securely. Locking/latching mechanism works nicely. Seals nice, no air draft coming through from above. Adjusting the height for our floor to ceiling height was fairly simple, unbolted the bottom section, took a SawzAll to it, and reattached it, piece of cake. No issues with the stoppers on the bottom falling off as others had mentioned. My father's a decent sized guy, so he went up and down a few times, felt really secure on them, so I decided to give it a try, gotta say, for the amount of times I'm going to be using them, I'll feel safe. For the other times, I'll feel 1000 times safer sending my wife up and down to fetch/store the holiday decorations and kiddo stuff we're saving over the rickety old wooden stairs we pulled out of there =) If you're not sure if these stairs are worth the money, let me assure you, they are. Just take your time and study the directions, I mean, pictures =)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Upgrade My house is a 1978 vintage, ranch, frame. I have done some serious rennovation and this is one of the last items. The attic access ladder is in the house proper. The old, leaky one was a sore spot forever. This one is insulated and gasketed. Should be a short payback on utility bills. Within a couple of weeks, we knew that the attic dust issue was greatly decreased. I don't know how long this has been on the market, but I found out about it at a friends house and I'm delighted!

The hinges, steel stairs, and latching mechanism really feel sturdy and that they'll last. The wood quality and insulation/weather stripping look great too. I just used a framing square, level, 2 packs of shims and 10 screws to install it following the simple instructions. I then filled the shim-space gaps with insulation and installed the new trim and painted it. The first time I latched it closed with the steel rod I knew it was a very good investment. No more saggy attic door letting the weather in the house!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product is exactly what I wanted I needed to replace a cheap, broken attic ladder and spent considerable time researching a new one. This unit is exactly what I was looking for: A good, solid unit with high weight rating. Installation was quite easy and I'm very pleased with this purchase. I was less interested in total cost than I was the quality, sturdiness and weight rating of the unit.
