The existing surface should be cleared. The new sheets will not adhere well to any surface other than drywall.

Answer:
I think it can if your existing backsplash has a smooth surface, like a regular ceramic tile. If the surface is rough or heavily textured, you'll have to remove it first.

Hello Smilie1too! Thank you for your question! The wall to which you plan to install backsplash panels to needs to be freshly cleaned, free from dust, grease, wax, etc. After you’ve cleaned the wall, be sure that it is dried thoroughly. Acceptable substrates are drywall, plaster or clean, smooth tile (glazed, porcelain type tile; not porous or textured), concrete, smooth stucco, wood paneling, mirror, glass, metal, etc.
Any damaged, loose or uneven areas must be repaired, patched, leveled and primed. Fill cracks and irregularities with wallboard compound or spackling, then sand smooth with fine-grade sandpaper. Any porous material like highly textured drywall, plywood (or any raw wood without primer), and wallpaper unless removed, sanded and primed, will result in adhesive failure. Answer:
All sheets require some type of cutting to insure they fit the area you want them placed. You just need to make sure your measurements are accurate. It's always best to "leave the line" when cutting rather than cutting on the line. The sheets I have installed have several cuts but the cut lines are not noticeable when complete.

Answer:
You do know that this backsplash isn't actually tin, right? It's plastic that looks like tin. Note the description says "PVC Decorative Backsplash Panel." That said, I installed this on top of old tile as I didn't want to deal with the mess of removing the tile either. I've had it up for over 6 years and it's just beautiful. Oh, and I wouldn't use nails, that would ruin it!

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Overall the product gave me the look I wanted The Brushed Nickel Decorative Wall Tile I used was to give the look of old tin tiles and it worked for what I needed. I would guess this would product would work very well for a wall or ceiling. The only difficulty I had was because the plastic isn't as stiff and I was using it to create a back to a shelf that was not yet hung. April 23, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by LOVE THIS BACKSPLASH! I needed something to cover my existing tile backsplash, which I no longer liked, and didn't want to remove the tile first as it would likely ruin the drywall behind it. I ordered several sheets in the rings design, (all in different colors) so I could decide what color looked best in my kitchen. Shipping was free to my home and I returned the colors that didn't work to my local store. I loved the look of these panels but was apprehensive about putting them on the walls. Finally I decided to go for it. I ordered 16 sheets in brushed nickel and called my brother (a professional contractor) to help my husband with the installation. If you have a large space to cover I recommend having it professionally installed. We had lots of places where the panels had to be cut around things, like window sills, moldings, etc., and we probably would have ruined a few sheets had my brother not been here to help. The finished product is absolutely beautiful and I couldn't be happier with it! I didn't want to leave a review until my backsplash had been up for a while so that I could comment on it's wear and durability. My backsplash has been up for exactly one year as I write this review. I'm happy to report that this product is extremely durable and looks exactly as it did a year ago when first installed. I use my kitchen A LOT and so I end up wiping the backsplash often, both behind my cooktop where food splatters and behind my sink where water collects. I always use a soft, warm dish cloth and have not had a single scratch on the panels. That said, DO NOT use any sort of abrasive sponges or cloths. Also, warm water (and maybe a little liquid dish soap) is all you ever need to use on it. Do not use any chemicals or cleaning fluids other than mild dish soap. It really is super easy to care for and everything wipes off with little to no effort. I am so happy I decided to use this product! See my attached pics of the cooktop area and kitchen desk. Good luck! July 15, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect for temporary backsplash I LOVE this product. I've already recommended it to several friends. My husband and I live in an apartment with plaster walls and no backsplash. I was tired of scrubbing the walls and having it still be dirty, so we put these up behind the stove and they look beautiful - like they came with the apartment. We live in an apartment with a lot of character, and the ring design really helped us live up to what was already in our apartment. We chose not to use the adhesives that are recommended, because we wanted removal to be as easy as possible but didn't want to worry about the panels falling down (which I read is a problem with the foam). So, we bought the brushed chrome finish and just staple gunned them into the wall - it will leave a small hole and the panels will pop right out when we need them to. It really worked great for us. If you want to see pictures, you can Google Newly New Yorkers temporary backsplash - there you'll find some pictures that we put up of our project. I'd put up the URL, but that's a no no on this site, evidently. Overall, great product. February 12, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product This worked beautifully as a back splash in the kitchen, It was easy to work with and easy to install. Looks great! September 1, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Love the look This was an easy way to change the look in my kitchen It's priced a bit high September 1, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Brushed Nickel Panels When.you install, measure twice and cut once. Before applying the glue put it up to make sure the pattern matches. Had to buy a few extra panels but in the end, it turned out beautiful! March 27, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great budget alternative to ceramic I'm a renter and didn't want to spend too much to do a kitchen backsplash. I'm very happy I found this product. It's very reasonably priced, looks great and installation is a piece of cake. The panels cut easily with scissors or an exacto knife so you can make all kinds of angle cuts to fit all kinds of corners. I chose to use a double sided tape for mounting, but they also have a glue available. So far it's been holding well and it looks like a million bucks. The whole project took a few hours, cost just a bit over a hundred, was very easy to do and totally changed the look of my kitchen. October 31, 2012
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by good alternative the product itself was good, the install using glue was not effective, this product would be better suited if you were to install in an area where one end of the install were an open access,my project required installing between two corners, the final piece was tricky, made more so with the glue February 10, 2015
