It is durable by itself but I would definitely recommmend applying 1-2 coats of waterbased polyurethane.

can i use this on steps?

Asked by: laura
The product is not designed for walking surfaces; I suspect you would not be happy with how quickly it would wear off.

The description claims "no priming." I was hoping that meant that Step 1 had a white base, but it doesn't. I'm finishing a PVC pipe - and the printed lettering shows right through. I'm also finishing an ABS pipe - and the black color of the substrate ruins the look. I'm going to have to prime both of them before I proceed. Not a big deal but I wish it was clearer in the description. For those of you who don't want your surface color to influence the final color of the faux wood, make sure you prime.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 10 foot rule I would say that it looks like wood grain from a far. As someone who has built TV scenic pieces its great for on camera. And i did a large desk top so it might be better on smaller pieces.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This works great! I can't believe how it looks like stain. I repainted an old cabinet to set my tv on and did the top with this and it turned out great. Would also be nice to have a darker color.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works...but with some drawbacks... The product works well, but there are some drawbacks. First, as another reviewer said, it's best to start with a white or light background. My item was dark, so I spray-painted it first with Kilz white primer. Next, when brushing on the base coat, do several light coats to get the right grain look and proper coverage, and be sure the last coat is very dry before putting on the next coat. The instructions say wait about 20 or 30 minutes, but when I put on my second coat after 30 minutes, it smeared the first coat, and I had to sand everything and start over with a fresh coat of primer. Last, when using the top coat, use several thin coats and let the item dry thoroughly before adding another coat. The top coat darkens as it dries, so patience is important when adding the top coat. I have two complaints - First, the quality of the brushes included in the kit is lousy, and several times I had to pick bristles out of the paint. Second, for $40 the company should use a better quality spray tip on the top coat spray can. Despite using the top coat as directed (including shaking it until my arm felt like it was going to fall off), the top coat spray can spit the material and created spots. For the most part, my project turned out OK, but there are some spots on it that I don't like and could have been avoided with a better quality spray tip. Overall, it's a good product that helped me accomplish my task.
