Window Grill

Is the window grill paintable inside and out?
Asked by: michellej12
Yes, Michelle. It's paintable. Sometimes these plastic windows parts are BETTER when painted as the plastic could yellow over time if not painted. Some manufacturers have overcome this problem and sell doors with window trim that doesn't yellow. I'm not sure about this door, so I painted mine.

Is this door stainable?

Asked by: Jenny
I'd say not. It's fiberglass. Paintable yes.

Is this door OK for a 6 inch wall?
Asked by: TDLDenver
This particular door is made for a 4-9/16" jamb. 2x4 construction. So you will need to build in or build out the jamb to fit your wall. Some stores also sell a jamb kit which extends the jamb to 6-9/16". Or you can special order a door with a custom jamb that can be made for your jamb size.

Do I measure the door for width or the inside frame? How about height?

Do I measure the door for width or the inside frame? How about height?
Asked by: mum
For just replacing the door itself (the slab), just measure the door. If doing a pre-hung, there are two measurements when you buy at Home Depot (or generally any place). That is the size of the slab width and height and the frame that the slab hangs in/on (door jamb), width, height and depth. Generally if your old slab measures the same as the new slab you should be OK all around just make sure the jamb width is good for your wall width. Me, I like to measure the rough opening to be super-sure. The rough opening is the framing opening that the builders made to accommodate the door when they built the house. You can see it, when you are replacing an existing door, with the trim molding off. Measure that opening and then buy a pre-hung door using the frame measurements on the door label or online what is listed in the "Specifications". You don't need a jamb that fills your rough opening exactly, you need a little bit of room (eighth/quarter inch or so top, left, right) to make the door plumb in the rough opening with wood shims. Don't forget to pay attention to the jamb width too. To give a better idea of width, the Feather River pre-hung 36" x 80" door (slab measurement) has a jamb measurement of 38.25" by 82.125". In an older home don't be surprised to see a pretty rough opening. I like to mount the jamb to the opening with trim screws on the latch side and long wood carpentry screws to replace a couple of the screws that mount the hinges. If I make a mistake, screws allow changes and once hung, you can hide the heads on the latch side with some painters caulk.

I bought two of these doors for my house and had them installed by a licensed professional in May of 2016. Within 24 hours of having them installed the grills of both doors had warped from the sun. I called Home Depot and they said it wasn't their issue and that I needed to reach out to Feather River, which really bugged me - stand behind your products... I sent Feather River an email and they promptly asked for photos. They sent a tech out and he replaced both grills about a week later. Well after another day they both warped again from the sun (mind you this is May in Michigan, not August in Florida). I called Feather River and they offered to replace door slabs with doors that had leaded glass. The same tech came and replaced both of my doors. I then painted them and was very happy with them. Well winter rolled around and the outer layer of one of the doors started peeling away from the rest of the door. I called Feather River again and they sent me a new door, but said my warranty was now void because of all of the service calls. I now have the issue that one of the door jambs is rotting and cracking and that is just my issue I guess. I also had the issue that both doors hinges rusted heavily after one year. I would highly recommend you stay away from this door and possibly other Feather River products.

Instalaltion went smoothly. Door seems to be of good quality. I bought two of these doors. Time will tell if they hold up well, but I'm impressed so far.

It has performed well. I painted inside and out, including the grills immediately. No issues. I installed a privacy film on the interior of the windows and don't understand the comments about the grills falling off. I couldn't even GET the interior grill off at that time, so I cut each of the 6 sections of film individually. Solid performance. Beautiful. My only reason for not giving this 5 stars is I believe all fiberglass doors should be sold with a nice coating on the door jam or a fiberglass door jam. What's the point of a fiberglass door when the frame is what tends to rot out. Frame rot is why we end up replacing doors by ANY manufacturer.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very poor quality door Don't be fooled by how this door looks in the store. It's got that Craftsman appeal with clean lines to boot, but this is a low quality product. Within a month of installation, the grille had deformed and popped out. There's no fixing it, and Feather River said it can't be replaced without replacing the entire door. On top of that, one of the threshold adjustment screws was broken. One other thing to note is the fiberglass door itself was warped a bit, which made achieving a good seal impossible. I can always see light poking through some parts of the door. The only good thing I'll say is Feather River completely refunded my purchase, even though it had been months since the install. Their customer service was solid. It's still my front door, but not for long — I'll soon be tearing it out and replacing it with a door that will (hopefully) last.

My decision was based upon fiberglass being weather resistant compared to steel doors which would rust or wood which would warp. I just bought 2 more for another renovation in a water front (seashore) area of NJ.
