I am not thrilled with this umbrella stand as the design is not like the last one I owned. This one has the filler hole on the side so if you try to fill it while it is laying flat, you can't since the water runs out the hole when it gets that high. You could try to balance it on its side while filling but that is awkward and hard for an 80 year old. They should have put the filler hole on the top and then there would be no problem. I did read one persons solution to the fact that some of them leak around the cap and I used his idea of taking my fruit juice cap and using it instead of the permanent cap that comes with it I would not buy one like this again.

We were looking for a no-frills, yet heavyweight fillable umbrella stand and found this one. This is a pretty straightforward piece with few moving parts. It works as advertised and I came up with a solution to the biggest complaint - the fact you can't remove the filler cap once screwed on. An apple juice bottle cap from my recycling bin matched the threads exactly and now I can fill/unfill with ease.

Simple low cost solution. Good weight to keep it in place under normal winds.

After you fill it with water, you have to put on the self-locking cap. That means you can't ever get it open again. And now the water has started slowly to leak out of the hole. You can't take off the cap or tighten it. Also since the cap won't come off for draining, I don't know what to do with it in the winter. It will freeze in the garage or shed and I don't want to leave it leaking in the house. I will probably have to buy a different product next year. It was pretty much a waste of my money. I will have to let it finish leaking and then maybe I can recycle it for the plastic.

We have an older patio table that has a cross piece between the legs. The other umbrella holders have a piece that is too high and won't fit through the hole in this cross piece. If this is your situation, this holder is the right height to slip under the cross piece and works well. It seems to be of sturdy construction and was easy to fill. We have some windy days where we live and had to tighten the screw as much as possible to keep the umbrella upright. So far, that has worked.
