Thank you for your question.I'm sorry we do not recommend Fiberock to be installed over a concrete slab. We do offer a Durock tile membrane as an option to this installation.

Radiant Heat Concrete Problem Solver?

This question is from Aqua-Tough 1/4 in. x 3 ft. x 5 ft. Underlayment

We purchased a home where the previous owners had not finished the radiant heating, and so were pumping water that was way too hot through the radiant heat in a mud floor. The result was that the surface is very sandy, and comes off when you rub or walk on it.

I want to put porcelain tile on this floor with a thinset. However, I have to separate the tile from the compromised mud first. I had thought of using a roll out underlayment, but then thought that the Aqua-Tough might do a better job of separating the mud from the tile.

Can anybody confirm that this would work? And if you have any other thoughts on this, please do share.

Appreciate your help in advance--

USG... thanks for the answer. Although, I asked the question more than a month ago, so it's moot at this point. Home Depot is likely a pretty big retailer for you guys, so it might make sense for you to check your product boards more frequently. Hey, maybe you have a lot of products, and so that would be hard, but from this perspective it seems like it might be worth it. Thanks again.

Hello Earthman, thank you for your question regarding our Fiberock Aqua Tough Underlayment. To properly install Fiberock Underlayment that is going to be tiled over we require that the Fiberock be set down in a bed of mud and mechanically attached to the subfloor using the recommended fasteners. You can go to www.usg.com to find the Fiberock Underlayment Installation Guide to find our complete recommendations for the proper installation of the Fiberock Aqua Tough Underlayment. If the existing bed of mud is loose and sandy it should be removed before installing the Fiberock. You need a nice, solid bed under the Fiberock to ensure that there is no movement in the floor when you walk on it. Any movement, no matter how slight, could lead to cracks forming in the grout lines and/or tiles. Read Less

I can not provide an answer, but I was wondering about the same thing. Not sure it will work as a sound board, but it sure should as a wall and floor insulation. It is about as heavy as a regular drywall (1.6 lb/sq ft) at half of the thickness, which is considerably better than typical mass loaded vinyl (1 lb/sq ft) and at a fraction of vinyl's cost. So I would think of it as a compromise between thin, Read More

Hello Musicproducer, thank you for your question regarding our Fiberock Aqua Tough Underlayment Panels. Unfortunately none of our Panels have an individual sound rating. The only sound ratings that we have for our Products is when they are tested as part of an Assembly, usually it is a Fire Rated Assembly that is being tested. Sorry we cannot be of more help.

Rated 5.0 out of 5 by 3 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by best backer i have ever used Extremely easy to cut and light, score and snap just like drywall. Less expensive than hardie and easier to work with. -Jeff Sweat September 21, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A year later in florida.. So others said its not good for outdoors or partially wet areas, well guess what, I had this around my lanai room on the bottom part of my screen frame since 4/2014 and I have sprinklers wetting it every second day, rain here in southwest florida and lots of sun and still looks the same way I bought it. No mold or stains, no chipping or cracking, my toddler keeps on hitting it with toys and its very durable, believe me.. So, if this fiberock can stay strong outside in this weather, then it surely can stay a lot stronger and longer inside. March 14, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Fiberock Installer friendly The fiberock panel is user friendly and easy to install. Long lasting. I prefer this product because it doesn't have the gridlines and it is flat. Because its flat the trowel rolls easily. I have not had one call back for cracks. June 4, 2015
