Do these Fire X smoke detectors meet the 10 year requirement?
Asked by: Howard
No they do not. The ten year law requires a smoked detector with a sealed lithium-ion battery. However check with you state and local laws because these are not required in every state and some places not every application.

The FireX smoke alarms are hard wired so that when one alarm goes off they all sound so no matter where you are in the house you can hear the alarm instantly. They chirp when the battery gets low. It is recommended to change the battery annually so the house is always protected. An alarm is required for each sleeping room and for each floor level. We have a total of eight for the whole house and garage. I installed the system when I built the house 12 years ago. I am very pleased with their appearance and function.

I checked the manufactured date on all of my 6 Smoke Monitors and discovered that they were all well over 10 years old and needed replacement. Buying this 4 pack made the most $$ sense. I also purchased 2 Smoke/CO2 Monitors (one for each floor) to complete the total replacement project. If you do this type of project you will need basic electrical skills - remember to find and shut off the related electric circuit. You may have to remove and replace the updated base plates and wire harnesses. Assuming that the original wire harnesses used "wire-nuts" - the only tool that you should need is a screw driver.

Replaced troublesome First Alert alarms with these, and so far no false alarms. Even though package says they are not compatible with products from other manufacturers, I still have one First Alert wired and it works just fine with the FireX. If you are comfortable using wire nuts there is no need to buy the optional conversion plug adapters; just disconnect the old one at the wire nuts and connect the new alarm using the same nuts. Removing the old mounting plate first allows easier access to the wiring.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Replaced all of our smoke detectors Needed to replace the smoke detectors in our home because they were over 20 years old! We purchased 2 of these 4-packs. Installation was straight forward. We used a non-contact voltage meter to be sure the electricity was off to each detector before disconnecting the old unit. Back up 9 volt battery included. These new units have the back up battery much more easily accessible than the old units. Will be a breeze to replace batteries yearly.

Replaced these units due to their age one or more had started to give false alarms. Checking the house at 4:30am is not my idea of a good time. The units I wanted to replace were also firex. When I checked Consumer Reports I found that Kidde had bought firex since mine had been installed. Kidde was one of the top rated ones and upon checking I found that firex carried the exact same model number as Kidde. My home has three floors including the basement and is hardwired. The only problem was that the electrical pigtail connector had been changed in the new models so each box had to have this as well as the base plate changed. Instead of 2 or 3 minutes each allow 10 minutes. The design is an improvement and these units have the battery backup replacement door on the face so you don't have to take them down to replace the batteries. So far they appear to be working fine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hush Button and Protection Also As a handyman for many years I have sold and installed over 1000 of this model and besides it's reliability the thing that sells it is the hush button. No more late night calls since I always make the end users aware of the hush button and what it does. Lets you sleep when you forget to change your battery by pressing the hush button with a broom stick. Easy to change batteries without taking down the unit

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works like a charm Because my house was 12 years old one night the alarm went off. I read that alarms must be changed every 10 years. I replaced all of mine at once. They plug in and use the same Socket being they are the same brand as originally installed. Now I am happy knowing that the alarm won't wake me up for another 10 years.

Even though they changed the connector geometry (why, please?) the supplied new connectors wire in easily enough. And batteries included is a very nice touch. Works as advertised, which I have come to appreciate greatly in this new house of mine!
