Customer Questions & Answers

Why is it necessary to replace entire unit every 10 years, or is it really necessary?

Recently there have been several articles in the newspaper that stress the need to replace the complete units every 10 years. After checking my Firex Model FADC owners manual, I found a small note that confirmed the same thing. But no explanation as to why! Does the ionization chamber (or whatever detects smoke smell) quit working or is this just a way to sell more equipment?
Asked by: Perplexed
My unit is 12 years old. Last night the alarm went off and there were no fires. I pushed the reset button, then it went off again. I pulled the battery out, then it went off again. I finally unplugged it and finally got some sleep.

Please tell me how to stop chirping after I dismantled all the smoke alarm and cut off the wires. I am desperate.

Asked by: Al
We just went through this whole scenario today, November 28, 2016, except for cutting the wires. We replaced the batteries, reset the units, cut off the power, etc...As my exhausted husband was lying on the floor by the CO monitor, we said "I wonder if it's that thing..." We pulled it from the wall and the noise stopped! Hope this helps.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Different Wiring Harness & Mounting Bracket I bought 8 of these to replace a group of 10-year-old smoke detectors of the same brand and equivalent Kidde/Firex model. Thought I'd be able to simply unplug the old ones and plug in the new ones. Wrong!! The current version has both a new/different wiring harness and a new/different mounting bracket. Still not a difficult task, but not nearly as quick or easy as I expected. Another case of unnecessary "improvements" making life more difficult.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works ok but missing part Not a direct replacement for the older model as claimed. AC power connector different. This unit was supposed to include a jumper cable with the new connector but that was missing. I had to jury rig to make it work.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from They don't seem to set-up/work properly, very difficult. I have five of these 'interconnected' smoke-alarms in my home. One started chirping...I guessed it needed a battery. I installed a battery... the smoke-alarm kept chirping. I bought a new battery and installed it.... the smoke-alarm kept chirping. How long will this go on... it seems like "for eternity"! I find devices that don't work per the advertisemnets and directions very disheartening. I would not again, buy these detectors. PS: its still chirping... even with a new battery!!!! I may have to 'cut' the wires... and then replace the smoke-alarms PPS: I'm a qualified fire protection engineer (which makes this problem into a serious situation for me)... how can I recommend such a device?).
