Rated 2.9 out of 5 by 10 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Worst Smoke Alarm Ever I live in a rental house with one of these first alert smoke alarms in every room. When I have to change the batteries, the doors to the battery compartments will not open. The videos online show them opening easily - they don't. They are made of hard, cheap plastic with poor die cutting so that the parts that are supposed to easily move to open and shut the battery compartments don't. The lever that is supposed to release the battery door doesn't - not on a single one of my smoke detectors. The compartments won't open without repeated trys at prying them open with a knife and in one case the lever broke off because the compartment would not budge. Totally frustrating to be doing all this with arms overhead. The smoke detectors wouldn't turn to come out of the ceiling brackets (attached to the ceiling) which would have allowed me to replace the battery without having to stand at the top of a ladder with arms up the whole time. All in all a horrible product. Before trying to change the battery the first time I did go online and read the manual, and then watched videos. I understood what was supposed to happen but these smoke detector battery compartment doors did not function as shown in manual or videos. October 14, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by False Chirps To Keep You Awake These detectors emit a random ( sic. random not every minute) intermittent chirping day and night. Similar to the old low battery chirp BUT RANDOM. A low battery alert continues once a minute - until you replace the battery and the termial voltage of the battery is above the reference voltage. There are random single chirp tones from 2 of the 4 SA 710 units I bought. The single chirp may not reoccur for a day or more. I am replacing a roof and the inspector requires smoke detectors throughout the home so I purchased 4 of the SA 710 and one CO2 detector. So 50% of the SA710 detectors ( 2 each ) chirp randomly- under any condition, in any room, hot or cold, fans on or off, new batteries any voltage.... If you get these, allocate some of your lifetime allocaion time to waste locating the culprit, measuring new battery voltages, swapping batteries- fiddling to determine the problem, putting the worst offenders away from the bedrooms so you can sleep at night. Reviewers say " Oh get the photo detector units they are more sensitive". Baloney, I never had problems with ionization detectors ( I just moved ) and having owned 5 homes- with ionization detectors in each one. They always worked reliably, cheap. I suggest do not buy these. What is worse than an intermittent safety device? Nothing ! These are more than twice the price of cheapo ionization detectors. I would suggest that you go get the Kidde Battery Operated Smoke Alarm Model # 21008051 Store SKU # 182262 for less than $5 from home depot and skip these malfunctioning SA710 units. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by good smoke detector The models of smoke detectors were quite limited in the stores. I'm happy with this photoelectric alarm, a good brand at a good price, purchased online. January 2, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Struggle with the battery Very difficult to remove the battery from the unit, when it is time to replace it. What a terrible design. There is no engineering at all. December 18, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by poor Bought 4...kills batteries in several months, false reports when humid, intermittent beeping would not trust these September 11, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product The suburb I live in requires these in every home. Home Depot online had the cheapest price; even cheaper than in-store. I needed 7, they were in stock. I installed them without issue, quickly in fact. I like that they come with a battery and installation hardware. Reliable--haven't had any false alarms. October 28, 2011
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good product for the price. Great features and easy to install. Excellent value for the price. Loud, compact design and easy battery installation without having to remove the unit. May 28, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great price for a Photoelectric Smoke Alarm I use this smoke alarm along with an ionization smoke alarm for its sensitivity. May 14, 2013
