Product Overview

The First Alert CO615 Carbon Monoxide Alarm is an easy-to-install, UL-listed alarm that combines advanced technology with a user-friendly design. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are like the flu, and you might not even know you're in danger. That's why a carbon monoxide alarm is an excellent way to protect your family. It detects the CO you can't see, smell or taste in the air. This carbon monoxide alarm utilizes an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor, the most accurate technology available. A single test/silence button, silences non-threatening alarms, low battery warnings and allows you to test the unit's functionality. It's easy-to-read backlit digital LED display gives you a clear read-out of current CO concentrations in parts per million. A remote mute silences nuisance alarms by pressing any button on a standard household remote control (remote not included). Installation of the CO615 is as simple as plugging it in to any wall outlet and it comes with a plug-in cord, offering multiple placement options. The CO615 alarm includes a battery back-up, giving you peace of mind in a power outage. An end-of-life alarm of three chirps alerts you to replace the unit. Two AA batteries are included. 7-year limited warranty. UL listed.

Asked by: Di
As I understand it, there's flexibility in placement of the detecors. To avoid false positives do not put the detectors near sources of combustion such as kitchens and furnace rooms. Same for garages.

I bought three units from Home Depot, rather than Amazon, because lots of buyers on Amazon were complaining that they got outdated units--in many cases, units that had become outdated years before purchase. I trust Home Depot, and I wasn't disappointed. The manufacture date (which is hidden under the removable part that the power cord comes out of) is January 18, 2017--just a few days before I purchased these units. So that's good. The only thing I didn't like was that I had to wait several weeks to receive them.

This CO alarm was purchased to replace an identical unit which reached its 7-year lifetime and shut down. The predecessor may have saved our lives when the boiler for our steam heat developed a leak and flooded the basement with CO. The predecessor was straightforward to use, did not issue any false alarms, and has a smoothly functioning battery backup. It was very useful that we had two of these alarms, because when the alarm went off, I assumed it was a false alarm. I took the second unit from the upstairs bedroom area as a backup. When it also sent an alarm, we called the gas company and got out of the house.

Unless you want to use the built-in extension cord, the alarm plugs directly into a wall outlet, which is very convenient. But most home outlets are just inches above the floor (ours is plugged into a hallway outlet), which means that you cannot read the CO level without getting down on the floor. But you can live with this alarm. You don't need to read the level unless/until the alarm sounds.

Replaced three of the same units which were "exhausted" after about seven years. CO detectors are hard to test. I think that the prior units functioned appropriately. The buzzer can be tested by pushing a button on the front of the unit. Replacing with the same brand and model obviated drilling new holes for wall placement.

Haven't needed to use it in true emergency but the test was successful. Pretty loud beep although it's in the basement near our gas furnace (which was recommended by a company that tuned up our furnace last year) and our rooms are two floors up. I suppose we should get another alarm for each floor.

I took it out of the box, installed the back-up batteries (supplied), and plugged it into an AC outlet 20+ feet away from my boiler and HWH. I gave it a test with the test button. . .A-OK. Since installing their have been zero PPM of CO. What more could you ask?
