Product Overview

The First Alert CO615 Carbon Monoxide Alarm is an easy-to-install, UL-listed alarm that combines advanced technology with a user-friendly design. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are like the flu, and you might not even know you're in danger. That's why a carbon monoxide alarm is an excellent way to protect your family. It detects the CO you can't see, smell or taste in the air. This carbon monoxide alarm utilizes an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor, the most accurate technology available. A single test/silence button, silences non-threatening alarms, low battery warnings and allows you to test the unit's functionality. It's easy-to-read backlit digital LED display gives you a clear read-out of current CO concentrations in parts per million. A remote mute silences nuisance alarms by pressing any button on a standard household remote control (remote not included). Installation of the CO615 is as simple as plugging it in to any wall outlet and it comes with a plug-in cord, offering multiple placement options. The CO615 alarm includes a battery back-up, giving you peace of mind in a power outage. An end-of-life alarm of three chirps alerts you to replace the unit. Two AA batteries are included. 7-year limited warranty. UL listed.

how high does it have to be
Asked by: Di
Because carbon monoxide weighs about the same as air, it doesn't have to be high or low; in fact, it shouldn't be too high. If you're mounting it on the wall, put it at eye level so you can reach and read it easily.

I bought three units from Home Depot, rather than Amazon, because lots of buyers on Amazon were complaining that they got outdated units--in many cases, units that had become outdated years before purchase. I trust Home Depot, and I wasn't disappointed. The manufacture date (which is hidden under the removable part that the power cord comes out of) is January 18, 2017--just a few days before I purchased these units. So that's good. The only thing I didn't like was that I had to wait several weeks to receive them.

I would have given it 5 stars, but one deficiency is that the green light that shows the unit is working is very dim (almost invisible) in the daylight unless one bends down to the height (in our case about a foot from the floor) of the unit. I have another, different model First Alert CO2 detector and the activation light on that unit is very easy to see. So this is an engineering defect of a product that probably looked good on the drawing board but was never observed in a real life setting.

Installed and tested as instructed and functions as featured. Hopefully one day both types of smoke detectors and CO detectors will be available in a single reliable compact unit.

I don't know why they can't show a continuous reading - even when it is zero, as a reassuring number. Plenty loud.

This CO alarm was purchased to replace an identical unit which reached its 7-year lifetime and shut down. The predecessor may have saved our lives when the boiler for our steam heat developed a leak and flooded the basement with CO. The predecessor was straightforward to use, did not issue any false alarms, and has a smoothly functioning battery backup. It was very useful that we had two of these alarms, because when the alarm went off, I assumed it was a false alarm. I took the second unit from the upstairs bedroom area as a backup. When it also sent an alarm, we called the gas company and got out of the house.

Very easy to install ... either mount on the wall, or just plug directly into any unswitched outlet (i.e., the outlet must be live all the time). Many homes which do not have a ceiling light fixture in a room will have at least one outlet in the room where one of the two sockets in the outlet is controlled by a wall switch. If you use one of these outlets, make sure you use the unswitched socket. Should test both sockets (plug a lamp into each socket) to determine which is the unswitched one. So far, haven't had a CO incident, so don't really know how it will react should one occur.

I have a secure feeling when I see the monitor lights on when the room lights are out. It's been installed in my 2BR, 1Ba 1200 sq ft one-level home for a week. I've had prior plug-in CO detectors in another home. This one is lighter weight and more adaptable where to place it. I chose it primarily because it was priced at a good value... in addition to being highly recommended on Consumer Reports!

Recently I realized that the recommended replacement of my CO2 detectors was 5 years. I bought the same units that I had before and found that the new ones now recommend a 7 year replacement. First Alert has always been a top name in detectors. We also use First Alert Smoke detectors.
