Questions & Answers

Can I add an extension to it for cutting even higher tree branches??

Asked by: Paul
I've been using my Stik for several years, to prune my grape vines (50 plants), and to pick lychees and coconuts. I'm a do-it-yourself person, and have a lot of tools, so I made a connector, using a couple of small blocks of wood and 'U' bolts, that allows me to attach my Stik to a window-washing extension pole. I attach a 20' long braided nylon cord to the ball at the bottom of the Stik handle, and I can pick coconuts that are 15'-20' off the ground. The Stik works great, slicing right through the thick coconut stem material, as long as it is green. It takes a little planning on how to 'attack' each tree: sometimes one must cut each coconut separately, but sometimes a bunch can be cut down at once. Other small fruits can be cut singly, or in bunches, depending on the fruit. It's a two person job: one person cuts, the other catches the fruit. We use a hula hoop with a piece of cloth that is held to the hoop with velcro, to create a 'net'. It's not hard to catch the fruit with that size 'net'. Don't try to catch a coconut with it, though.(:^)

what width of branches can I cut with this pruner

Asked by: Jose
The opening is about 1.25", so that is the maximum size that it will cut. It cuts green branches much easier than old dead branches that are dried out.

The cutting part makes sharp clean cuts which are better for the tree. I like not having to use a rope as with other types of tree pruners. Take precaution to not cut limbs larger than what is recommended or the head mechanism will not work as intended. This is my second EZ Reach Stik. The first one lasted 5 years and I used it to trim many trees. It is a great tool for the garden.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for pruning high branches The Fiskars pole pruner is perfect for trimming small branches that are just out of reach. I use it to trim and shape an 8 foot holly tree and to cut off dead branches from an oak tree. The cutting mechanism is smooth and easy to use. I only use it on branches no bigger than the thickness of my thumb to avoid putting too much stress of the mechanism and cutting blade. Anything bigger than that should really be cut using a pole saw. This is a great pole pruner and saves me from climbing up a ladder and risking injury.

It is my 'go-to' for many purposes on my hedges and trees. I use it to cut the smaller branches from fallen tree limbs to pack more debris in my wheelbarrow, where I also use it as a 'pick up stick' to save my back from bending over numerous times during felling and cleanup. So up here in New York's Catskill mountains, I sorely missed my favorite Florida yard tool so I bought a second one for up here. I might also mention that last year I purchased the longer version for up here, which is a match for the one I have had in Florida for about 3 years now. All "four" are simply great tools I have pruned with thousands of time over years without a single issue.

It's good for getting into hard-to-reach spots where lopping shears might be cumbersome. This is especially handy for thorny plants like bougainvillea or some palms. Now I can prune the trees without them stabbing me back.

In about November the chain drive broke. I probably should've returned it but I didn't have the receipt so I just decided to purchase a new one a few weeks ago.

We have used it to do low hanging tree branches and fought back the black berries that took over our dog yard. Easy to use and safe.

Do not even use it and would return it if I could. Compared to my rear bite string cutter I thought it would be much better. It is not. I regret spending the money. The rear bite string puller gets tangled and is cumbersome because of the string mechanism, BUT at least when you "hook" a small flexible branch you pull it toward you into position and snip. When using this one with the "forward bite" or front jaws I find myself chasing the branch as it flexes away from me and the length at least for me then becomes too short from time to time. Then it has no saw necessitating getting the old one for the next thicker branch. Hate it. Fiskars has a forward facing long reach, non string cutter, WITH the saw, which I have NOT purchased because it is basically $100, still forward facing but at least longer, and worst of all the saw needs to be attached or swung forward every time you use it. I think this would be absurd but admittedly have never used it and will not waste a $100 especially after this fiasco. What is needed and I am looking for is a "rear bite" cutter, like the old string one, BUT "no strings attached", or the internal cutting mechanism, with the length of the old string cutter and the saw fixed (adjustable) on top. Show me that and while I may not be happy about the price - for that I would consider spending the $100. Please pass this to Fiskars. Thank you.
