I have trimmers just like this but they are old and so dull they won't cut much of anything anymore. Its a shame they can't be sharpened (one of the blades has a sort of serrated edge to it that can't be sharpened) and once dull, they are useless. Is it possible to sharpen the blades when they become dull instead of just throwing them away?? Thank you.

Thank youf for contacting Fiskars. Here are the steps to sharpen the hedge shears:
1. With the tool facing up and working on the non-serrated blade hold the sharpening stone flat to the blade and rub lightly up and down the length of the blade. This will remove any burs from the blade edge.

2. Now flip the tool over so you are looking at the backside. Again, on the non-serrated blade 'eye up' the angle and sharpen in an up and down motion (perpendicular to the blade, not back and forth the long way along the blade). This will sharpen the non-serrated blade.
3. With the tool still flipped over on the serrated blade, you can run the sharpening stone lightly up and down the long way along the blade to remove burs and lightly sharpen (though this blade typically doesn't need much sharpening). Do not sharpen on the side with the serrations.

Answer:
Thank you for contacting Fiskars. The knob can be used to loosen the blades to allow for thicker plant materials to be cut, or tighten for smaller pieces like grass and weeks.

It's a tensioner to adjust the speed and how easy they open and close. They work great. I use mine to cut weeds around the yard and they chop it right up and are light weight.

Answer:
Hi TheDucks,
Tall grass possibly, however these shears are designed for hedges. Using them on grass will be difficult due to the angle of the blades in relation to the handles.

Answer:
Thank you for contacting Fiskars. To keep your shears clean, please wipe the blades with a clean dry cloth after each use, and put a light coating of oil on them to prevent rust.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Not really sure what these would actually work on I purchased these to trim some unruly shrubs along the driveway, but ended up returning them. They wouldn't cut through thinner branches (they bent them instead) and they weren't tough enough for the larger ones... If I closed them just the right amount of force they'd cut through a small handful of what I needed to do. I eventually gave up and went totally overboard by pulling out the chain saw November 3, 2015
