Customer Questions & Answers

Can the 70" Bypass Tree Pruner be used to cut or saw palm fronds?

Asked by: Lovey
Palm fronds are very hard to cut, I have done it but it was tough. You have to normally do it from the top of the palm frond, from the bottom I didn't have any success. A powered trimmer would probably work better.

Cutting blade frequently jams against the housing. It is not bent. How to fix?

Asked by: norlua
Make sure the cord is properly aligned in the pulley and out the back. If it is in the wrong track or not aligned properly, it can jam easily

Customer Reviews

70 in. Bypass Tree Pruner is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 159.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Tree Pruner I bought the pruner in time to prune my pear trees. It extends to 12 feet to make it reach most branches without a ladder. It cuts branches up to 1 1/2 inches. The saw cuts larger branches.

Some other reviewers have been dissatisfied with the thickness of the blade and others have complained about the wing nut coming loose. I have used this trimmer for several hours and it works very well. I tightened the wing nut with a pair of pliers before I used it and it is still tight. I have had no problems with the blade bending and I have cut branches as thick as 4 1/2 inches without problems. The only problem I encountered was the blade being pinched in the cut as the branch began to sag (due to my angle). Skip the gym on the day you will use it, it is labor intensive, but neither of these things are the problem with the unit itself.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent value I needed a manual pole pruner for 2 apple trees on my property. I found this in stock at my local Home Depot. I looked it up online (on my phone) to check reviews. Reviews were excellent AND it was on sale on Home Depot's site for $10 less than in-store price. I purchased it online with "free store pickup." I brought the pruner to Customer Service, showed the online transaction # and happily left with the new, discounted pruner. It works as described, adjusts easily and is plenty long enough for my trees. Saw blade will be handy for thicker branches. Synthetic pole material won't rust, like my previous pruner did. Highly recommended.

I saw this one at Home Depot a few weeks ago and decided to get it since it was on sale and it looked lightweight and relatively sturdy. The fiberglass pole, instead of a metal pole, allows it to be light. Since it was the Fiskars brand, I assumed it was a good quality item based on the other tools that I had that were made by Fiskars. I liked the design of the unit. It also seemed easy to handle and use the telescoping feature. The reason for my lower rating is that it doesn't look like it will last. When I took off the packaging, I noticed that I had to tighten all the screws to secure the head and the telescoping braking mechanism to the pole. I don't know if that was intentional by the manufacturer or if it was poor quality control. There was nothing mentioned in the instructions about tightening the bolts. The braking mechanism using friction, but it looks like it may wear over time and not hold. There should be a better locking mechanism, possibly with spring loaded metal posts that join one pole to the other. The cord doesn't stay in the track of the pulley all the time. You have to be careful that it is in the track. The track should be deeper. I think it will be okay for trimming small branches. But, it doesn't look like it will last more than a couple of seasons. Of course, that depends upon how much I use it. Hopefully, it will meet or exceed my expectations. But, only time will tell.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from As I began to use pruner, The blade is too... As I began to use pruner, The blade is too short, not very thick, the pole came apart several times(at the adjustable height knob), also the rope came off after the first pull. Tried to put it back on, but will need to watch a video to see correct way to tie it on. So, for the money, pruner is OK.
