Answer:
Yes. You have to start on one of the sides to open it. Pull out on the lip of the lid and push in on the top edge of the barrel. You may have to rotate the lid front to back to get it to pop loose. Once it pops loose you can slide it towards the other side to free the other tabs.

Answer:
Yes. It just pops off. If the barrel is full, you'll need to work on it a bit, but really no problem.

Answer:
No, the top does not remove; however, the barrel is filled by a diverter in the gutter downspout. There is no need to remove the top. When the rain barrel is completely filled the water from the gutter runs down the downspout as normal.

Answer:
We bought a brass spigot before we installed our rain barrel as reviews had indicated the one that comes with the barrel is plastic and doesn't last long. It should last a long time.

Customer Reviews

Holden 48 gal. Rain Barrel is rated 3.2 out of 5 by 27.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great item, not so good workmanship I bought this item to help offset our expensive water bills. The plan was to use this barrel to water our planters around the patio and the fruit garden next to our house. It was easy to install and does a really good job collecting water. The two main drawbacks are that 1) the spigot is located up so that about ten gallons of water can't be retrieved unless you open the lid (which takes some effort) and scoop out the water. 2) The spigot is really poor quality and easy breaks along the screw ridges. A design defect of the part. I would ask for a replacement spigot, but if it's the same it will probably break too. Several other reviews mention this so I was extra gentle in screwing it in. The wear and tear of opening the valve was enough to cause the break. My solution was to buy a $5 brass faucet in its place. Not a bad buy for the price, but needs some modification for better function.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Rainwater collection system The product developed a leak where the spigot was inserted into the barrel. When I first tightened the spigot, the leak stopped. However, several days later, a leak developed and when I tightened the spigot it broke off. I have contacted the manufacturer since the product had a three year warranty. A reply was received and a review is underway. A response will be made within 3 to 5 days.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from not too bad The hole for the hose should have been placed a little lower. i'm left with at least 2-3 gallons of water. be sure to prop it up on something to get some flow pressure or you won't get any water out of the hose. i think it says not to do that, but I am going to anyway

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do Not Like This is the first season of using my rain barrel and the faucet part is leaking . The water level where the valve is does not let the container go empty.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved this product! This rain barrel functions exactly how I hoped it would. It was easy for my husband to install and it looks great next to the house. I researched many styles and am completely pleased with my purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for the garden This barrel was easy to install-the directions have pictures of what to do rather than written instructions which makes it very simple. If you follow the instructions correctly you'll have no problems. I have two 4x8 raised beds, 1 4x4 and one 4x10 full of veggies and wanted to use rain water for them...veggies seem to grow better with rain water rather than tap water. It saves on my water an sewage bill too. The only problem is- I want another one for the flower garden!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from not worth the money Poorly designed, leaks, will not completely empty.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fiskars Rain-Barrel I've wanted one for years and now it's full and ready to use. It's not that easy but will be well worth the effort. I bought two small bags of decorative gravel (Home Depot) and a couple of concrete pavers (Home Depot) to level it on but am very proud of my work. I'm saving water and putting untreated rain water on my veggies and fruit trees. It's another small way I can become more independent. This is a no-brainer - every home should have at least one rain-barrel. I'm going to look into offering installation services now that I've done it.
