Yes, if you mean that there is some type of mechanism inside the pruner which increases the force of your grip. Answer:
No, this is a by-pass style pruner. But, it has an ergonomic handle that turns while you apply pressure so you don't lose your grip. This set is also approved by the Arthritis Foundation. They have a gear system and make short work of branches of an inch in diameter.
I have bad arthritis in my hands and had zero pain or fatigue when I was finished pruning trees in front of our house.

I am not exactly sure what you mean by "ratchet". This clipper does have a gear system that allows for very easy cutting of large diameter branches.

Thank you for contacting Fiskars. This pruner features the Powergear technology which is different from ratcheting action. We encourage you to stop by your local Home Depot store where you can test the tool and feel how easy it is to cut with.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 3.6 out of 5 by 137 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by must-have for any pruning job This was the second delivery from Peapod (online grocery service) I have received. And after the driver's first trip up our porch steps I realized I had never trimmed my "guardian rose bush" like I'd meant to after last week's delivery. So while PP Driver headed back & forth between truck & kitchen, I quickly trimmed back the yellow rose bush so it would no longer pick visitor's pockets. The Fiskars PowerGear pruners worked beautifully. I had no trouble at all snipping through woody branches as thick as my pinky finger. The gear design is a wonderful addition to pruning shears - very helpful. November 5, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by power titanium pruner It was easy to use How much can you say about a pair of garden shears...They were easy to use. May 18, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Lightweight, sharp and powerful cutters I liked the feel of these cutters right out of the easy to open package. They are light and feel very comfortable in the hand. It has a unique cutting drive system powered by a gear to amplify the cutting strength As you close the cutter the bottom handle rotates slightly as the power gear turns and makes cutting thicker branches much easier and cutting all branches with less fatigue. It works the same in both hands but feels more comfortable in the right hand due to the power gear action. Made of high strength plastic there is no worrying about rust either. It also has a handy lock on top that's easy to use and is brightly colored making it easy to see or find September 20, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Didn't work for me This clipper is a new ergonomic design that supposedly is designed to make it easier to open the handles and then cut. The one side of the handle rotates outward as it opens which would be fine except that it opens so wide that my hand won't spread that far. Any less than fully open the actual jaws of the cutter will not open wide enough to cut anything. I finally gave up. My husband has much bigger hands than I do so he will be able to use them. I purchased another more classic type of pruners for me to use. March 22, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Best hand pruner ever... if you are right handed This is by far the best hand pruner I have ever used. It is extremely sharp and provides a great deal of leverage considering the small size of the pruner. The pruner cut through every branch/plant i attempted to prune with ease. The one caveat to all of this is that the pruner appears to be exclusively designed for right handed individuals and is much more comfortable to operate with your right hand. This is the only CON, being that I am left handed I noticed this immediately. The motion of the pruner is not conducive to a left handed individual. The mechanics operate in the exact opposite direction as one would expect. I am not sure if there is a right hand and left hand specific model for this pruner but if there is, I would run out and buy a left handed version too. September 9, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy on the hands This has been easy to use and is especially helpful when doing lots of pruning at once. It causes less stress on the hands than the standard pruner. March 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice little pruner I purchased this for pruning my herbs. Works well, very glad I picked this one! Very comfortable in hand. March 29, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Poor Workmanship For the power gear model, and my third Fiskars Titanium pruner, I was expecting a better quality product. I have purchased at least 10 other Fiskars hand tools previously. The pruner gets stuck when you make a full cut as it catches on a plastic part that wasn't shaved down fully. I no longer recommend Fiskars, or will purchase another one of their products, especially for the higher costs of their tools over competitors. March 15, 2016
