I would like to provide a review of my recent purchase from Home Depot - my Fiskars Super Splitting Axe. Home Depot was great in helping me place the on-line order and getting it to me quickly. The axe, welll, it is unbelievable! I have split my own firewood for over 30 years. I have had some good 8 pound splitting mauls. None of them would hold a candle to this tool. It is sturdy and perfectly shaped. It pops the wood, even what I call the "ornery" pieces. I have worn off some of the Fiskars name. But, the axe itself is as solid as can be. I would not want to be without mine and would highly recommend it to others. The proof is the pile of wood in the background! Dennis

I bought this axe after seeing the great reviews it had on this website and was immediately pleased with my purchase. I was initially surprised at how much (better) I could now split wood than I could before. It is fast, light, and does not wear you out at all. I touched the edge up with a diamond stone and do so every 2 times I chop, this way the edge stays razor sharp and splits cleanly. I heated my home this whole winter with this axe, splitting probably 30 or so cords of wood by hand. This axe is a must if you chop wood by hand. period.

This blade is sharp! Make sure to wear leather gloves when using. The blade protector that comes with the axe is easy to remove and install.
Axe is fairly light but is different from a conventional axe in that the head has a rapidly increasing width behind the cutting edge. The handle feels different in that its construction varies from heavy and tough near the head to light and hollow near the end. There is a flare near the handle end that does a good job of preventing the ax from 'flying off' in a missed hit situation. Several times I missed the target log by overreaching and hit the handle. Instead of the handle splitting like a wood handle this ax showed virtually no marks and it did not send a serious shock back to my hands..
Now for the splitting performance. This is why the axe gets only three stars. I compared this axe to a conventional 6 lb fiber glass handle splitting maul. For doing a split with one stroke the conventional maul was significantly more effective in moderately tough 6 to 8 inch wood - this axe just does not have the head weight to complete the job. However, this axe was the best I have ever seen for starting a split in tough splitting wood like locust and hickory. In this case again the problem was that this axe does not have the weight to complete the split. Multiple hits in the same crack may be required. Maybe you can do that but the target could be 1/8 " or less wide. I am usually not this good at aiming.
For easy to split smaller wood this axe may be preferable due too its lighter weight and its good safe handle feel and toughness (watch the sharp cutting edge). I did not find this axe as good as a conventional 6 lb maul for one hit splits in easy splitting larger wood like ash and oak but I am keeping it anyway because it does make that initial split better than anything I have seen. Finishing the split off may require a splitting wedge and hammer or hammering on the end of this axe after placing its blade back in the started split.
Finally, I did not find the metal in this axe to be particularly soft as others have noted.

I have been using an HD brand splitting maul for the last 4 years with mixed results. I never split wood previously to this so I had no reference. I was doing a little research on splitting wood and the Fiskars axes kept being mentioned. I looked them up and saw what good rarings they had and purchased one from HD online. What a difference!! I am splitting wood with single hits that the maul would not split with 3 and 4 tries.I will definitely be buying a Fiskars hand axe to go with this.

I recently bought a Kobolt axe, that fell apart in 3 places, and it took forever to spilt logs that this new Fiskars chopped up without much effort.
This Fiskars will not break , cause its one solid piece of steel, and the handle is longer to get higher swings for one swing splits. The blade will need to be sharpen after an hour of splitting, cause its made out of softer steel to give a better bite, and easier cut into the log.
I like chopping wood for exercise, and can do it for over 5 hours with this Fiskars, and not get worn out , or tired at all. It even comes with a hard plastic cover for the axe head that you can also use as a handle. Great axe, and split wood piles up fast. Buy it.

When they say one hit one split they are not kidding around, My first swing was at a wet 24" round piece of wood full of knots, With full power the head not only penetrated the wood but split and pushed both pieces off my cutting block, with another person loading wood on my block I was able to split one cord per hour, thanks to fiskars and gatorade, The blade is made from a very soft piece of metal, when sharpened with a fiskars sharpener it will hold a razor edge for a entire cord of wood , I accidentally dragged the blade across the finger of a new pair of leather gloves the blade went through the glove and into my finger, VERY SHARP.

I bought this axe after two large white oak trees were cut down in my yard. The tool is perfect for the job. The length of the handle adds power to each stroke. Even though the wood is green, the Fiskars X27 splits it with minimal effort.

When I first saw this axe I was skeptical that it could perform as well as my 8lb splitting maul that I already had. After a couple swings on a large oak log I was shocked at the performance. Unlike my heavier maul I could swing this bad boy all day without killing my shoulders and it split faster and easier than the old timer. It could also be used for lighter jobs with ease. Unlike a lot of other gimicky tools this tool walked the walk and backed up it's brag with real results. If you like splitting wood you will love this baby. The long handle is light and like a cored baseball bat gives you the head velocity and since Kinetic Energy= mass x velocity squared the added velocity is more important than the heavy mass so there you have it a great tool that really moves fast and therefore splits fast.
