Product Overview

This is a rugged, industrial grade disposable pleated air filter. It features a synthetic fiber filtering medium that is laminated to an expanded metal backing. This combination is then folded into an accordion pleat arrangement to increase filtering surface. This greater filtering surface allows more effective filtration while keeping airflow resistance low. The media pack is encased and sealed within a die-cut, moisture resistant frame. Performance level is MERV 8.

  • MERV rating: 8

Customer Questions & Answers

You show a image of the filter rating scheme, but you don't indicate what this filter's rating is.

The range goes from 6-10. Which is it for this box of 6 (judging from the price I'd expect it to be on the low end of the range)?
Asked by: UsedtobeRedbeard
Home Depot is using a "Filter Performance Rating" system ranging from a FPR of 4 to FPR 10. You can view this by going to Buying Guides >Heating and Cooling > Air Filters. I did click on a Honeywell filter 2- pack and under the specifications tab, details: Filter Performance Rating FPR = not rated. This probably means no one has payed the test lab to give this filter a rating yet. If you look at the picture of this filter pack, you can see a circle and inside it is FPR 8. The size on the package picture is for this filter so they are not using a universal picture for their Honeywell filters. Which do you trust, the picture or the specifications? What is a consumer to do? Look a couple of lines lower in the details and we have a MERV Rating (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value). Minimum efficiency reporting value, commonly known as MERV rating, is a measurement scale designed in 1987 by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) to rate the effectiveness of air filters. You can find a chart of MERV rating at: http://www.mechreps.com/PDF/Merv_Rating_Chart.pdf. I don't know why we needed another filter rating system, but our ANSI/ASHRAE uses the MERV ratings to set minimums for residential applications. I have only seen the FPR chart on Home Depot's site and wonder if the 20 steps of the MERV rating was too confusing for consumers or is it some "Ad Mans" hype so the consumer is comparing Apples to Oranges and will buy his product. With both rating systems, higher numbers trap smaller partials. Smaller partials trapped requires shorter filter change intervals and the blower system must work harder and often delivers less air flow. How often do you want to change your filter? How soon do you want to repair your blower system? How clean do you NEED your air to be? I know this did not tell you your rating as I can't tell which filter you are looking at from your question and the picture description provided with the question takes me nowhere. Maybe you can find a MERV rating, find a 1 pack of the same filter, find a picture or decide there is not that much difference in the filters in this range and don't want to work your blower any harder than you have to.

What is the actual size of this filter

I need a 20" x 25" by 4" filter, smaller then that will be sucked into my blower or not filter all the air that goes thru the cold air return.

While they are not fancy, they sure do get the job done. We have major dust problems in our house, and these filters with a MERV rating of 8 catch the dust quite nicely. Some sites say they should last up to three months, but if you have dust problems like our house, then you might want to change them out every two months or even every month for extreme dust problems. Replacing the filters regularly on an A/C unit is a lot less costly than paying for a service call to clean the evaporator coil. Plus you will breath a little better.

Had new heater and air conditioner put in 5/27/16 and they recommended these filters. Fit perfect and does it's job. Changed filter 1/4/17 (7 months) to see how the new one would fit or if I would have a problem. At that time it still did not need to be changed but changed it anyway. With this case I will have enough to last me a long long time. They were delivered in great shape the box was perfect.

Initially it sat crooked in the duct with slight air gaps at the top, allowing unfiltered air to pass by. Eventually we discovered it was too small to secure in the furnace that requires an actual size of 20" x 25" by 4" as it got sucked into the fan. Very disappointing.

A basic filter that appears to work fine and doesn't restrict air flow excessively. Actual size is slightly smaller than standard dimensions. Fits loosely in the unit. I only recommend this filter because of the price and air flow. I would not recommend it if another filter met those criteria and fit better.

These filters are the same filter that my furnace man replaced my old filter with, and charged me 4 times more. You do have to purchase 6 at a time, so you have to store the box someplace, but at the rate I use these filters, they will last 3 years. Seems to me to be a good buy.
