You will be given keys to unlock the individual mail compartments however the key to the USPS master lock which opens the entire compartment assembly is only granted to USPS employees.

Answer: 
The individual mail compartments are large enough to accommodate magazines and newspapers however if the mail is not picked up and the compartment is full the mail carrier will leave a notice stating that you'll have to pick up undelivered mail at the designated post office for your area.

This standard requires a new form factor (larger boxes) to accommodate the types of mail received today.
