Customer Questions & Answers

size is the intake pipe ?

Asked by: al

Can this be used to 'boost' the water pressure for our existing garden hoses?

I am looking for something to work inline with our garden hoses to run sprinklers. Our water pressure is good but the distance that we have to travel leaves the sprinklers a bit 'blah'. Would like to find something that we can put at the halfway point to provide the pressure that the sprinklers really need. TIA!

Customer Reviews

1/2 HP Sprinkler/Utility Pump is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 23.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from 12+ years; just now needs service Flotec FP5112 I originally bought this pump to supply lawn sprinklers and to pressure wash my dock and boat. Worked great for both applications as well as evacuating my hot tub (450 gallons in about 10 minutes) and 'puddle scooping' my flood prone lower garages. Never had a problem with it; always worked, and depending on the water source, I discovered a few tricks that may be helpful to others considering purchasing this product. 1) Place the pump as close to the water SOURCE as possible to minimize both intake hose/pipe length and elevation. This simple step has a huge impact on the amount of water flowing through the pump. Keep in mind that water pumps are much more efficient at 'pushing' water than they are at 'sucking' it, sort of the opposite of a vaccum cleaner. 2) Use the biggest intake hose/pipe possible, again, to increase flow (not to be confused with pressure: pressure is at the discharge end of the pump). 3) I rigged up a 1" PVC "T" assembly on the discharge to facilitate priming the pump. Priming is necessary should the intake hose/pipe drain completely, especially when the pump is more than 3' or so above the water source. If it fits your circumstances, you might want to consider attaching a 'foot valve'. This valve will not only help minimize debris in the water, but also prevent the intake line from draining between uses, thus avoiding the need to prime. 4) And speaking of debris in the water: some sprinklers, specifically the brass impact-type ones, can be quite sensitive to silt, sand, leaves, etc. that can clog the nozzles. Doesn't seem to bother the pump, but filtering the water at the source will help in this regard. Note that the filter may also reduce flow. It's a trade off... When attached to a pressure washer, this pump is perfectly happy running even when no water is being discharged. If I thought I could influence the design engineers, I would suggest incorporating some sort of pressure release valve to help relieve some of the excess pressure that builds up in the housing under these type applications. Which brings me back to the main point of this review. The housing finally blew. And yet, I am not disappointed... I mean, I get 12+ years of flawless operation. And although the customer service rep at Flotec was kurt and generally uninterested in helping me get the part I need, the folks at Home Depot took the bull by the horns and I expect to pick up my new housing in a couple of days. And get this, the whole assembly is only going to cost about $25. Not bad... and considering they a still selling this pump 12 years later, should tell you something about it's overall quality. Well, good luck with your project. I hope I've make it clear that I like this pump and highly recommend it to anyone who needs a light weight, portable pump.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from flotec sprinker pump I use this pump to sprinkle my lawn at my lake cabin. I pump water from the end of the dock, (40 feet) up 5 feet through the pump and into the 100 foot of hose. Plenty of pressure. This is the second Flotec I have had. The first one lasted 12 years and was given to me used. It does a great job for such a little pump and a equally small price, $149. Its quiet and water proof and runs on 115V. A great Pump.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding pump, my first I am very happy with the Flotec FP5112 utility pump. It is very handy for pumping clear water out of my spring-fed creed to water my lawn and garden flowers. (Especially when it has been quite dry out, and the County advises not to use city water to water the lawns, etc.) Free water from my creek means my lawn and garden stays alive!! The pump was quite useful this very morning, after a hard night of steady rain, and my septic tank and fill lines were overflowing with the saturation of the grounds. I dropped a short length of hose into the various fill line cap openings, and pumped out many hundreds of gallons of water, off into the lowlands beyond my yard. Two thumbs up on this pump!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally the search is over! I've been looking for a perfect pump to deliver water from my 850 gallon storage tank which feeds my 3x 36 gallon watering reservoirs which then feeds this pump and allows me to water my plants. I installed a PVC pipe with a quick connect/disconnect and a inline valve on each tank so all I have to do is carry the pump, quick connect it, and let it run. The pressure is amazing. On my 1/2" x 25' hose it maintains a consistent watering rate of 1 gallon every 10 seconds. I've burned through many hydroponic inline pumps and experimented with an array of other Flotec submersible pumps in my quest to find the perfect pump. All I can say is I love this pump so much that I actually came on here to write a love letter about it which is probably not a very healthy relationship to have with an inanimate object.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great pump I am on my 2nd pump which I use as a circulation pump for my solar pool heater, which ran just about non stop during the sunny days for 2 years well wort the price, I think it held up good in salt water conditions. It also was pumping the water up 10 feet to my solar water heater coils on my roof then back to the pool. Also no leaks ever. The motor bearings only went out due to seal letting salt get in, also the over heat protector worked good when it finally went out, protecting my controll panel components. I recommend this pump for anyone who wants a dependable pump.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great pump ! saving money Great pump. I just moved into my new water front home in VA. I use lake water to water my new lawn daily. The front of my yard is over 200 ft. from the water and about 30 ft. higher than the lake. The pump easily drives one spinker in the front yard or two in the back yard. The pump cost $149 and the hoses --- etc. about the same. I figure it will pay for itself within two months of use. A lot cheaper than the usual $5000+ sprinker systems being used by a few of my neighbors. (Note: Use good hoses and this system will work great.)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great for rain barrel to garden/orchard transfers This pump works great for getting water from 50 gallon rain barrels to the garden or orchard via regular garden hose. Set up is easy. It primes easily by pouring a little water into the outlet port. Just connect a sturdy one inch garden or other hose with a foot valve attached to one end for the inlet connection and any garden hose connected to the outlet connection. It empties a 50 gallon rain barrel quickly and efficiently with great pressure through 200 feet of garden hose. The only reason for a four star rating rather than a five is because I haven't used the pump long enough to determine it's durability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tough and capapable little pump! I've owned this pump for nearly three years, using it to pump water from our backyard canal for irrigation. I use it as part of a "poor man's sprinkler system," pumping water to 5 sprinkler heads using water hose lines. I use a 1 inch PVC pipe from the canal, a water strainer/filter at the source, and a check valve to keep prime. It is quiet and very powerful, and I use it heavily during the dryer months here in South Florida. It gets a beak during Spring and Summer rains, but it has been a dependable workhorse that keeps my lawn and plants happy. I would highly recommend it.
