Recently, after waking up at 4 am to a high water alarm from my sump pit because the power was out, I decided to install the Flotec backup system.
Installation was simple and went very smooth. I did have to purchase a few items as I chose to have the pump lower. This was a bit of a problem as the Home Depot I was at did not stock 1 1/4" PVC pipeing. With a little re-thinking at the store and a few more $, I was able to find the materials to change it to ABS.
I'm very happy with the product so far and it works perfect. I also like the case.
Great investment for the piece-of-mind!

I echo the other good reviews. No sense repeating the good points, but I want to share a few tips to make your installation as easy as possible.
1) Remember to get the adaptors when you buy the marine battery (not included with this product). Otherwise the round connectors won't fit on the battery.
2) When putting together the float switch, the diagramed instructions are a bit out of order. Look at them all, then assemble. Very easy, but there is a small plastic pin that if put in as instructed is a pain.
3) Test to make sure the switch is at the right height. Adjust as needed. Add water to the sump with a hose or bucket. Bonus; get to see the product in action!
I would definitely recommend this product. Very easy to install. Don't forget you will need PVC glue, a marine battery (and adaptor).

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Gjehms Flotec Sump pump
We purchased the Flotec Backup sump pump just over a year ago and we are very pleased with it. We do not stress about our system like we used to (prior to purchasing this back up system) and feel more at ease knowing it is there. Installation was straight-forward with no real problems. We were initially surprised that the battery does not come with this system and especially so when we found out the battery cost up to $100. In the end we still feel this was a sound investment to protect us from flood from a sump hole back up.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Sumpuser Newly designed case is not user friendly!
The new clam shell style case is difficult to use. To insert the heavy battery, you must balance the open case on a six inch high block of wood, attempt to connect the battery leads, and then shut the case. This is difficult to do because the plastic hinges keep popping apart.
This was a replacement unit. The control unit of the first one went up in smoke after a power outage.
Also, this unit is not carried by your local Home Depot store, so it is a hassle having to deal directly with Flotec.

This back-up sump pump is the perfect solution. It comes with everything you need for the installation. It is powerful enough to lift water 10 feet or higher. Works with a standard deep-cycle battery.
After months of research, this was my choice. After installing, I can confirm it was the perfect choice.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by MarcP A good investment
This is a good investment in case of a sump pump failure or extended power outage. Water still needs to be pumped out even when the power is out. Be warned that there's no battery that comes with it. You must buy it separately, but any boat deep cycle battery will work with it. You can find one at any boat or automotive shops.
Securing the battery inside was tricky due to the clamshell shape of the case. A 4" block of wood helped greatly, but it is not something you'll be doing regularly. Once the battery is in, it'll be a long while before you do that again. Know that at the time of writing, the photo shown on the Home Depot site is not reflective of the real product today. It doesn't look like that today. It now has a panel at the front with various status lights to tell you what is going on. It also has an easy test mode to make sure you have it all connected right without simulating a flood.
It's a pricey purchase for something that hopefully won't be used a lot. However, it provides real peace of mind. If the primary pump fails or the power goes out, you have this one to keep your basement dry. And it has an alarm to grab your attention when an event occurs.
