Customer Questions & Answers

I have a Pygmy Date palm and live in zone 8a. With a heater will this greenhouse help it survive freezing nights?

Asked by: Austin
My SpringHouse is new so I my experience is not extensive but the temperature in Macon, Georgia recently went to 27 F (12/6/16) and with my Pellonis ceramic heater on the inside of the SpringHouse on low, the temperature inside was 52 F. Even if not freezing outside but there are cold winds, the SpringHouse keeps the plants from getting beaten up and losing moisture. Moisture loss can be a big problem during any season.

How durable is the shell?

I live in Ohio. I would like to keep the green house up all winter. But, I’m worried that the shell will not stand up to the winter. It can be both cold and windy. Will the shell get brittle in the cold? Is it sturdy enough to stand up to normal winter wind? I've see the wind spec, but does it really stay put up to that? Thank you
Asked by: JimF
The shell is like the plastic used in the clear, very sturdy beach and pool inflatables so I doubt it will get brittle but I have only had mine for a couple of months. The fabric is a strong canvas. It holds in heat and moisture very well. I added styrofoam boards around the bottom because I was skeptical about how I was going to keep plants from freezing but I have found that they are probably not necessary in my area. I used a Pellonis ceramic heater set on low when the temperature hit 27 F recently (12/6/16) here in Macon, Georgia. It was 52 F inside the greenhouse. It's like a bubble that traps in heat and moisture after it is secured to its base, and its a super windshield that keeps plants from getting beat up. Mine is on a patio with the bottoms zip-tied, through the bottom grommets, to the patio railings.

With hail storms this year damaging my original SpringHouse I ordered this one. The new plastic is easier to stretch and dimple which I was not excited about. It seemed like it might be easy to tear through. I can't really say much else as I had to return it because the one I received had a large tear in the plastic near one of the seams and when I went to reorder it, Home Depot had sold out and I was not able to order a new one.

I could assemble this by myself (60 yr old female) and it suits my purposes perfectly. I have orchids that I could no longer bring into the house for the winter. A small ceramic heater has kept the night time temps at 65 degrees even though its been 40 degrees at night. It has only been up two weeks so we will see the durability of the material over the winter. On a warm day I opened the window and door to allow fresh air to circulate. Since it is on my cement back patio I plan on using cinder blocks on the corners (outside) and shelf legs (inside) to hold it down if it gets windy. The holes in the base and tie downs will work if you put it on ground/grass. Seems sturdy and hoping the zippered door holds up to repeated opening/closing for watering and air circulation. If it lasts 3-4 years (putting it away during summer) it will be a very good investment.

I use it on a covered porch to overwinter my tropicals usually on the porch in the summer. It last me 3 or 4 winters, before the plastic around the zipper tears at tight spots. Still it is a good size and design. Easy to put up. I bit funky to fold-up to put away. Very compact storage. Best product I have found to fit my needs.

It's sturdy and it holds in the moisture and quite a bit of heat if using a ceramic heater. I reside in Macon, Georgia, for purposes of employment. I will be returning to Florida some day. In the meantime, I have a large collection of plants and cuttings at work where my super boss indulges my gardening hobby/distraction. During the spring, summer and early fall, my plants have been on his office patio and at the office back door. It was his idea for me to get "some sort of greenhouse for the winter." I had been worried about what I was going to do so I was relieved when he suggested the solution. I found this SpringHouse at Home Depot and watched the YouTube video about setting it up. After I got it, it was so easy to set up. One little struggle was the doorway cover being hard to meet up to the house to zip it closed but I found I could mash the top right front corner of the frame toward the doorway and get enough slack to zipper it closed, and zippering becomes easier and easier after that as the plastic doorway cover adjusts. Just before the temperatures went to below freezing here about a week ago (12/6/16+), I relocated my plants to the SpringHouse. I probably did not need the Styrofoam boards I had added around the bottom because the heat stays inside very well top to bottom. The moisture also stays inside very well, too, which is great for all my plants but especially my still-sensitive cuttings that are still potentially rooting. I have kept the ceramic heater on low and when the outside temperature was 27 F, the inside was approximately 52 F. Even without a heater, when the outside is in the mid-forties and the wind is whipping around, the inside of the greenhouse is pleasant. I have it zip-tied along the bottom three corners to the patio railing. Concrete blocks hold down the inside front left corner where there is no balcony to strap it to. This SpringHouse is such a problem solver. My goal is to root cuttings from the beautiful trees around me in Macon, and then plant them (and the rest of my collection) on my vacant lot in Florida where I will retire in a few years. I want to landscape my lot most SPECIALLY with living souvenirs; ornamental cherry blossom trees, saucer magnolias, etc.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what I needed! I was looking for something to house my tropical patio plants in for the winter in Louisiana. This heavy duty greenhouse is the perfect for my needs. The zipper closures are double-sided and heavy duty as well. Includes a mesh door and window for aeration and I love the the access ports for hoses and/or electrical wiring. As a 62 year old female, I am usually able to master projects, however with this one I had to ask my son to help me get it up as the tension on the rods is very strong. It took him about 20 minutes. It stands under my patio roof line so it is protected from wind. So far, it's worked out great for my needs!
