Product Overview

  • Water based
  • Flame retardant
  • Easy cleanup
FireGuard E-84 is a superior intumescent fire retardant coating that creates a thin fire retardant and fire resistant barrier on a wide range of interior building surfaces. In the event of a fire, this product can prevent the spread of flames and reduce smoke levels to aid in the protection of life and property. When FireGuard E-84 Intumescent Paint is exposed to heat generated by flames, it swells to form an insulating char barrier that fire cannot penetrate. Without a source of fuel, the fire is unable to spread. In addition to protecting from flame, this char barrier functions as an insulating blanket to help protect the underlying substrate from the intense heat of a fire. This can postpone or even prevent ignition for up to two hours (ASTM E-119). Beyond preventing the spread of flames, FireGuard E-84 can reduce the production of smoke a leading cause of fire related fatalities.
  • ASTM E-84 class A and E-84 extended test
  • ASTM E-119 Wall protection up to 2 hours; floor protection up to 1 hour
  • Superior intumescences performance
  • Retards flames and reduces smoke
  • Use on OSB, gypsum board, plywood, structural steel, steel decking, PVC, ridged foam board, open and closed cell spray foam insulation and more
  • Water based; ease of application and clean up
  • Durable smooth finish
  • Smoke development index 5
  • Flame spread index 5

Once dried it is probably not much more toxic than regular latex paint. Here is the MSDS if you want to know more: http://shieldindustries.com/Assemblies/New%20TDS/SDS%20FF%20FireGuard%20E-84%20Intumescent%20Paint%20-%202015%20-%20Copy.pdf

FireGuard E-84 5 gal. Intumescent Primer is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The firerated coating was perfect to have both my building... The firerated coating was perfect to have both my building and fire inspectors happy. Only down fall was the final paint and wallpaper adhesion to painted surface, would suggest good primer coat as possible solution. We decided since its meant to repel fire guess it repels paint too

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This stuff was so thick. It took me 40... This stuff was so thick. It took me 40 minutes and two drill motors to mix this stuff. Then the airless sprayer I rented from THD couldn't spray it. It was a disaster. Check with your insurance agent to see if this stuff is even required for your application. This was a BIG waste of time and money. Says one gallon covers 400 sf. NOT TRUE. I went through two 5-gallon pails and did not even cover 1000 sf.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Mis-leading information, not properly rated for steel The manufacturer claims that this product can be used for 1 and 2 hour ratings on steel, this is not true, check with your local building official. Any product used as a fireproofing for steel framed buildings (requiring an hourly rating by the building code) has to be tested in a full-scale burn test by a certified lab using various steel sizes, fireproofing is not a one thickness for all steel sizes, each different sized member has to be tested individually to determine the correct hourly rating.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product Coverage per square foot isn't the best, considering to get the fire protection they advertise it will take 2-3 coats at least with a roller. Coverage isn't the same for all material's either. Drywall only needs around 10mils of dry thickness while OSB needs 30 mils. Overall though it is cheap fire insurance to help stop spread of fire. I used about 4.5 gallons to cover the ceiling of a 25' x 28' garage with OSB.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saved THOUSANDS of $$$ and Passed Code This product saved me from having to spend thousands of dollars in costruction costs! The building inspector wanted me to increase the fire rating on a wall in my building. Rather than adding exspensive fire rated building materials (not to mention the labor), I was able to paint on this product and achieve a 1 hour fire rating! Very easy to use!!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Hard to paint over I purchased this product to paint over the drywall in some rooms I was remodeling to try and make our home that much more safe. Everything I read said you could paint over it and it would work like a primer. Wrong. You can't roller over it like you would normally paint a wall because the paint won't stick to it. The moment you roller back over the same spot it peels off. We called the company and the rep said we can't paint over it. They suggested a spray gun might work, but rollers are a no go. Luckily we tested it in a closet. We ended up putting many very light coats over it in single roll at a time. The rest of the bucket won't go to waste. We will be using the rest of it the attic where we aren't a painting over. So, we won't be out the money, but weren't able to use it for our intended purpose.
