This oak mantel is sanded and is pretty close to being ready to put a finish on it when it comes out of the box. The craftsmanship of the mantel itself is pretty good, the top sounds sort of hollow when you set something on it due to the thickness, but it isn't a big deal. They supply what is approximately a 2x4 cut in half lengthwise into a strip to serve as the mount that you attach to the wall, and then you attach the mantel down onto the top of the strip. This works decently though I may do something a little different to permanently install it, as their instructions suggest the strip and the mantel be attached with liquid nails, which is of course going to destroy it if you want to be able to remove it. I have cabling I want to be able to access on rare occasion behind it, so I am probbly going to figure out a way to use some angle steel to be able to have it hang more securely without needing to use glue/adhesive as well as the screws.
It was really well packed within two cardboard layers and padding, however the first one I received had wood damage and needed to be replaced by the factory, which was done promptly. You will want to inspect it before you mount it.
The tag inside the mantel says that it is Made in Vietnam for Foster Mantels.

Rated 2 out of 5Â by Edzo purchase only if you have no carpentry skills
When you say unfinished you mean it. There is no craftsmanship in this product. Simple mitre cuts must have been made by school kids. I had way to much sanding to correct the mantle. Also materials for top are oak plywood not solid board, sounds hollow. Looks good now but could have saved money building it myself.

I received this in a rather large over-box that protected the shelf pretty well. overall the package was done very well.
The shelf out of the box needs to be finished by hand with a very light grit sandpaper to get a nice smooth finish. I tested some stains on the inside of the mantel since it was hollow. Red Oak looked the best as this is already made of oak.
This product mounts to the wall with an internal 2x2 that you mount horizontally on the wall. It with no mounting hardware at all. I used 2-1/2" lag screws. i would suggest getting a stud finder so you can anchor the 2x2 to the framing in the wall. Drill pilot holes so you do not split the 2x2.
Also there is no hardware to mount the shelf to the internal 2x2. i used small wood screws for this. I also drilled pilot holes with a little bit of an offset to flush mount the screws .to not split the wood 2x2 or the oak during installation. Another option would be to use a wood glue or liquid nail to secure the mantel to the 2x2, but it will make removing the shelf at a later point difficult.

Rated 1 out of 5 Factory damaged.
Both front corners were smashed. There were no signs of damage to either outer or inner layers of packaging; internal corner guards were in place. Could not be repaired to look good. (putty/filler). Painted black and installed in my storage shed. Looks like it belongs. Just the right size for one gallon paint can storage (Behr paint of course)-A little more Q.C. in Viet Nam would help.
