This mantel looks great and was very easy to install. It has finished off our fireplace area very nicely and just in time for the holidays.

This is an attractive mantel, especially for the price of about $100, including delivery. It is made of light color wood, like fir or pine, that takes stain well. It is well made, with tight joints, and no excess glue. The installation if fairly easy. Use a stud finder to locate studs to screw into. Then mount the included ledger board, and secure the mantel to the board. The board that is included is about 2 X 2 in size. I cut down a 2 X 6 that I had, to about size 2 X 3 1/2, and used that instead. That way I could put two screws instead of one into each stud for extra strength. I did not use glue to attach the ledger board, as the instructions recommended, in case I want to remove it some day. It seems plenty strong without the glue.

Even though the top and the bottom of this mantel are oak veneer, the rest of it is all oak, and it stained and varnished beautifully. The price was less expensive by $50 than competitor's prices, so it is a great deal.

My mantel was a great addition to my fireplace. It looks beautiful. The only downside was that even though it came, "paint ready", it was a bit rough. But after a bit of sanding and staining, it looks great. You definitely need two people and additional glue, etc that was not included.

I purchased this mantle and it definitely needs to be painted, the wood had a smooth finish. I wiped the dust off and painted two coats of Behr Premium Plus Ultra Pure White High Gloss. I had to sand it a little after the first coat in a few spots, applied the second coat and it looks beautiful. The paint dried pretty quick in thirty degree weather. I have a brick fireplace that already had pre-drilled holes in the brick so, I only had to buy anchor bolts. After much measuring, I put it up on my own... Woo Hoo!! I now have a wonderful mantle in time for Christmas. This totally modernizes my 80's brick fireplace.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by cohoman Good value, nice looking mantle
I purchased this 6 ft mantle to be mounted on a brick fireplace. The top and bottom surfaces of this mantle are made of oak veneered plywood, and the top edges and sides are made of solid oak. The mantle itself is constructed quite well, although there was a very small gap between the top front bullnosed edge and the top mantle surface (I filled it in with stainable wood filler and sanded it). Since the mantle is hollow, it is actually not very heavy. It also comes with a 2x2" pine ledger which I attached to my brick fireplace (using 2-3/4" mason screws), then you slide the mantle over it and glue & nail it into the ledger. In all I'm pleased with the product, but the oak grain is really heavy and it really stands out after I stained it a dark red mahogany. But, the price is right for what you get.
