What makes this floor nailer specifically for exotic flooring (or different from a normal floor nailer)? I'm installing 1/2'' x 5'' Strand Woven Bamboo and want to purchase the correct nail gun.
Asked by: WVUGoMounties
This nailer is specific to "exotic" flooring because it shoots an 18ga L-cleat, which is thinner than traditional 16ga cleats or 15.5ga flooring staples, which would typically split and damage more dense, exotic wood floors, and the same with softer engineered floors. 16ga cleats and 15.5ga flooring staples are designed for traditional (medium density) hardwoods like oak, walnut and maple, but will typically damage the tongue of the flooring on dense exotic floors and soft engineered floors.

My new floor I'm installing is 9/16 inch bamboo 3390lbs on the Jenka scale . I'm installing this Bamboo flooring over an existing 3/4 inch oak hardwood floor with 3/4 inch subfloor below that . Does this flooring nailer have the guts to drive a 1-1/2 inch L cleat through the bamboo and the oak ?? Thanks!
Asked by: AN
The PF18GLCN, should be able to drive the 18ga L-cleat with no problem. Your new flooring is at the top end of density for any 18ga flooring nailer to handle, but it is within operating range.

Customer Reviews

18-Gauge L Cleat Flooring Nailer is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great gun at great price with excellent warranty The nailer comes completely assembled without a carrying/storage case and is ready to fire. It comes with pre-attached 5/8 & 9/16” foot plate. My application was on 3/8” flooring so I just switched the foot plate by un-screwing 4 bolts at the bottom with provided tool. I had set the pressure at 80psi and this tool had no problems shooting the nails. You will be using 18 ga. L Cleat nails (not provided) because that is the only cleat nail size supported by this nailer. You can use any generic brand as long as it’s 18 ga. The air inlet size for this nailer is ¼” NPT and fastener range from 1-1/4” to 1-3/4”. After replacing the foot plate, it would be better firing into a sample flooring piece to ensure proper fastener placement. Fiberglass mallet feels sturdy and looks stylish. It also has a non-marring white rubber head which works as blemish guard on your hardwood flooring. Just by holding the nailer, you can tell that it’s made out of high end material. This pneumatic gun performed above and beyond my expectations while installing 3/8” Woven Cherry bamboo covering 800 Sq. Ft. area in my basement. I borrowed neighbor’s compressor since I don’t own one. Keep in mind that operation pressure should be within 70-115 psi and should not exceed that. The anti-dust cap attached with air inlet is tiny but important part of tool that you will use to cover air connector when not in use. The internal parts of the tool are in fact lubricated through the air inlet by adding 2 to 3 drop of pneumatic fastening tool oil (provided). Do not use any other lubricant. The gun comes with a 7 years warranty which translates into 7 years of peace of mind. User Manual shipped with the tool explains all important areas in good details along with illustrations. I strongly recommend reading it before using the tool. Some of the other Freeman’s Nailers come with a carrying/storage case, it would’ve been nice if this had a storage case. Make sure to wear safety glasses during use. For extreme DIYers and professional, it is a great gun at great price with excellent warranty.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very pleased I ordered 2000 sq. ft. of solid bamboo, and though I only intend to install a small portion during the first stage of remodel, I didn't want to rent a nailer. I found this nailer online at what seemed to be a very good price, and after reading the reviews, decided to take the chance. It arrived exactly on time, and it included extra pads so that the nailer can accommodate all flooring thicknesses. The instructions were sufficient for someone who has never used a nailer before. I installed 180 sq. ft. of flooring without a single issue, misfire, or jam.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Value! I purchased this nailer for three reasons. 1. It is recommended for exotic hardwoods and stranded bamboo (I was laying stranded bamboo) 2. It is half the price of other similar nailers on the market 3. It was cheaper than renting. Just with the three above reasons it was worth the money, but what made this an excellent value for me was the quality of the nailer. Everything form the 3/8" to 3/4" wood thickness flexibility, fiberglass mallet, light weight and overall appearance, not to mention its out of the box safe to use on pre-finished floors. Simply a great value! Worked like a champ on a small kitchen and dining room, couldn't ask for more!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great The first nailer arrived with a leak but fired well. Called Freeman 800 number they sent a replacement (new) right away with a return label included for shipping defective one back to them-free shipping both ways as it should. The new gun arrived in 3 days. Did not jam once though only fired 150 so far. The depth of cleat depends on both air pressure and hammering force. After a few firing and adjustments, the nailing was neat and consistent. Freeman's customer service was really excellent. 5 stars! Don't return to store as indicated in a card within the package--Call Freeman instead if there is any issue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked perfectly on solid acacia 3/4" flooring. Put down about 400 square feet of pre-finished acacia. The nailer didn't jam and had occasional, but minimal splitting on the tongues of some extra dense boards. The only thing that you need to be careful of is that the nailer has a second lip that may lock onto the edge of the board. This will cause you to put a nail into the face of the board - pay attention and make sure that the well marked arrow is where you want it to be - on the tongue!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product for the job intended I wish the size of the product could be made slightly different to allow it to be used closer to the wall area in both the starting point and where you need to complete the flooring in the ending process. It works very well and I am SO GREAT-FULL that the store clerk assigned to help me knew so much about your product and what I needed to install my flooring. It was fully assembled when it arrived, I just had to put the correct plate on to match the flooring. I had no jam ups even after installing over 500 sq. ft. of 3/4 inch hardwood. I was a first time user and after just a few nails it was easy to get a feel on how hard to strike the nailer.
