Thank you. I assumed that the company wouldn't recommend for liability issues. But I think I've heard of several people using them that way. Do you plug it into an outdoor outlet with no problems?

Answer:
The instructions say to use insulation, to cover the entire length of the heat tape & pipe, INCLUDING the thermostat. Yes, according to the instructions, the thermostat SHOULD be covered with insulation, like the rest of the tape.

However, if you are using this on a water pipe, rather than a hose, as I did, DO NOT wrap with the foil. The foil is intended to protect the water HOSE from the heat given off. A water PIPE should not need this. It is NOT recommended to further encase the heat tape with anything, such as the foam insulation, as it does give off heat, and the wrapping could cause a fire. Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Not worth the money Product produces very little heat from what its advertised. I can't see it preventing pipes from freezing. February 23, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Quit working in a week Quit working in a week, wouldn't replace. Even with receipt. Will buy different placed next time. February 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product, easy to install Our pipes had froze and broke, repaired pipes and installed heat tape, no more problems February 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Use for a heater hose on my RV water hose I got this installed on my hose and it seemed to be working very well, however before I had a chance to really test it out and use it, I had to disconnect my water hose and shutoff the water, due to frozen water in the line. I will be hooking it up again, once the water line has thawed. The hose I had it installed on already had frozen water in it so that really didn't help. And then, the water supply line froze, so I just diconnected the hose. We had -20 temps and now we are still in the 20-30 range, so I may have to wait until some warmer days to test this out again. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by good quality tape Make sure you read the instuctions before instillation. I installed one last year and did it wrong! DUH!! I had to change my installation on the pipes from last year!! My fault completely. Other than my mistake it was a great product and ez to install. The hardest part was covering it with rolled insullation.I have a small crawl and the old home isnt piped for ez instillaton. Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Instructions or package does not tell you that the product does not work in an above 38 degree environment. Product only works in outside environment below 38 degrees due to nonadjustable thermostat. Instructions or package neglects to mention that key fact. I had to find that out by researching the reviews on-line. The product seems to be fairly well made and probably works for certain applications. It will not work in any indoor to outdoor type installation. I will be returning the product shortly. February 13, 2014
