I have the problem with my gutter downspout end openings freezing after melted gutter snow refreezes. Does the extender prevent the water from freezing? Does the winter cold and snow damage the extenders?

Answer:
They do roll up so as long as the metal spring is them is not worn out
they are 48 inches long when fully unrolled but subtract a few inches that will be on the downspout to see if it will fit in your area

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 2.3 out of 5 by 27 reviewers.
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Ehh - Not that great. I had high hopes for this based on others reviews, but it just doesn't work well for me. It takes a lot of pressure to force the tubing to rollout flat and dispense the water. For me I installed it as written on the package, but when it fills up with water - the tube doesn't rollout flat. Instead the water just leaks out over the top of the the tubing. June 14, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Mine had no holes! Like the description says, the unit I purchased had no holes punched out of it. We had severe thunderstorms go through the same day that I installed this. When I looked out to see if it was working, I could see that it was completely full and water which was also escaping from where I attached it to the downspout. The next day, I went outside to check on it to see if it had rolled back up and to my surprise, it was still completely full of water! Not a single hole in the product for the water to drain out of. I had to stab it with a fork! I took it off and installed it inside my garbage can where it belongs. March 18, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Doesn't work It doesn't extend when it rains, it just pops off and makes ALL the water go by your house. It freezes in the winter and then is useless. May 23, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Downspout drain Don't waste your money on these, they are a useless. Spring is so strong that it won't roll out until water is backed up about five feet up the downspout. Worse,if it freezes, it will destroy the downspout. When it does finally unroll, the drain holes immediately plug with shingle grit and leaves, so it takes days for the water to finally drain. Bad design, bad product. December 4, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Twisted into a knot I had this on one of my downspouts for two months before it twisted itself into a big knot. Totally not worth it. Just buy a expandable extender. June 11, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by WORTHLESS! I cannot believe they can even sell this product. Does not work at all! Does not unroll so water just pours out where it is attached, no matter how tight you pull the ziptie. Very cheaply made. It began raining right after I installed it and it was a complete disaster! Not only does it have holes at the end to release the water if it did unroll but it has random holes down the length of the cheap flimsy tube. Did not work for 5 seconds despite following the instructions to the letter. Complete garbage! Don't waste your time or money. Zero stars!!!!!! August 29, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Drain away downspout extender It poured for 27 straight days and torrential downpours , not once did this product work as intended. Don't waste your money October 20, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Auto matic drain away , not happening Product Did Not work as described in description, will be taking back to Home Depot. We have had Rain for 10/12 days in a row,not once did this Drain away extender open up!!! If there was a Negative Star rating this product deserves this. October 6, 2015
