MoStarter strips are one of the most overlooked parts of a quality roofing system! That’s because some folks try to use a cut-up strip shingle as the “starter” course on the roof. Unfortunately, cut-up shingles may not have properly positioned adhesive to ensure adequate wind-resistance. They also require cutting and fastening on the roof, which can be time consuming and create more waste.

California residents: see  Proposition 65 information

  • Factory-applied Dura-Grip helps prevent shingle blow offs, adhesive tightly locks down asphalt shingles at both the eave and rake areas of the roof
  • Peel-and-stick roll eliminates the time and hassle of cutting and nailing shingles as the starter course
  • QuickStart can be used with any asphalt shingle with exposure of 6 in. (152 mm) or less
  • Special deck-side adhesive allows for one-time repositioning, while aggressively adhering over time
  • QuickStart is part of the GAF lifetime roofing system and covered by up to a lifetime limited warranty when installed on lifetime shingle roofs

If you're using felt, a few extra nails along the edges won't hurt when you install it - it will help the starter strip lay flatter. Remember, if you're also installing drip edge it goes under the felt along the eaves and over the felt along the rakes.

Answer:
No - I don't think this would work well at all as this is designed as the starter course under asphalt shingles. I think for your application you should consider stripping the existing shingles and installing an appropriate underlayment before putting on the metal roofing.

Answer:
It really depends on the condition of the existing shingles. In general, it's easier with better results to strip the old shingles off.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 8 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Time Saver Choosing QuickStart Peel and Stick instead of cutting a bunch of shingles was a no-brainer for me! I used roofing nails every 8" or so since it was only 40-45 degrees outside. As expected, backing didnt stick at all. November 22, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Experienced Roofer I've used QuickStart and ProStart as starter courses for the roof. I usually use ProStart because of how it's cheaper than using a three-tab shingle and it gives you a better warranty, but QuickStart is preferred by some of my guys because you can install it quicker than you can ProStart. It's a simple roll-out, peel off the strip, and apply it to the roof. We put some nails in it, but you don't have to. August 27, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very good product/ easy to use This QuickStart product is very easy to use. I either use this or the Pro Start starter strip shingle. Either one is such a better product and easier to use than a 3 tab. I know longer use a razor blade and am much more confident in the quality work I do for my customers. August 26, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by General Contractor, 22 years Remember to apply when temperatures are between 45 and 110 degrees F. Any colder and it may not stick the way you want; any hotter and the sun melts the entire Earth. If it's in between those temperatures though, it works like a charm! July 31, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by QuickStart- Stays On, Easy Installation I've been doing roofs for 20 years, and I've been using QuickStart for quite some time now. QuickStart is a peel and stick, and skeptics would say that's dangerous because it'll eventually blow off. This product doesn't. It has Dura-Grip technology that allows the QuickStart to go on and stay on. And it eliminates the need for cutting shingles and leaving mess. Great Product! July 29, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Warranty Great product, but If you want an even better wind warranty, nail it down and put 6 nails in each shingle. It can be used with almost any architectural shingle, but don't use it with designer shingles. Those have to have a different, larger starter course. July 31, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Decent product, does not stick well, in the end if you Overall I was pleased with this product but it did not adhere well to the substrate. When I was rolling it over the felt paper it didn't stick in all the places. They do recommend to nail down so after you do that it is not bad. April 1, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Specs misleading The dimensions of the strip are 9 inches by 33 feet. I had to zoom in on the picture of the box to find this out. September 15, 2013
