My roofer told me need 45 squares... is this 81 bundles

Asked by: Ashley
45 Sq roof is a very big roof. You sure your roofer didn't mean 45 bundles which is about 15 Sq. I have seen many roofing companies try to scam the avg. person since they don't have the understanding and seem to take advantage of people they can. If you act as your own general contractor and hire the subs that actually do the work, you will save a lot of money. 10-15% to the person that sells you the job, then the general cont. that subs out the work. Avg. labor cost is about 75.00 sq. and then cost vary for material depending on the type of shingles you get, catch on sale from on sale $18 bundle x3= $54 per sq. to high end maybe closer to $60forsome places that offer impact hail resistant or metal or shake these vary as well. But for the avg. asphalt is around 22-25 on sale, say 25x 3 = 75sq. so at $75 sq. and then the other material from nails to synthetic underlayment these are a few hundred in extras. You could save almost 1/2 your cost of a replacement roof. I have replaced 20 sq. roofs for 3500-4500. And avg. Roofing co. will charge you 10-12,000.

The ridge caps actually cost more than the shingles? $45 for 20 feet? That seems nuts.

Asked by: al
It depends. The $45.00 ridge cap that you are thinking of is probably a combination ridge cap and roof ridge ventilation system which does cost about $45.00 for 20 feet, though ridge cap can be made of the three tab shingles that cost about $26.00 per bundle. A single three tab shingle can make 18 inches of ridge cap. Owens Corning says that there are 22 shingles in one of their bundles, so figure the cost. A ridge cap venting system is an alternative to the metal roof peak vents that are seen on many up to code roof installations. Inadequate ventilation is one of the most prevalent causes of premature roof failure. Without adequate ventilation, the rafters and plywood or OSB shingle substrate will soak up water vapor and will not dry out. The substrate will then delaminate and mildew and the shingles nails will pull out in a wind, the rafters will begin to bow and mildew, and the roof will feel spongy when you walk on it. As I recall, in order to figure out how much ventilation that you need, take the floor square footage of the attic and divide by 300 to get the NFVA or net free vent area. The take the square inches ventilated by any one ventilator and convert that figure into square footage and divide it into the NFVA. The result is the number of ventilators of that type that you will need. This could be many, many ventilators or a few ventilators depending on the capacity of the ventilator in question. Essentially, the cost could be nearly the same if code is followed. For my money, I would rather have a ridge cap ventilation system if the cost is close because I like the look.

Do I have to remove old shingles, or can they be installed over existing

Do I have to remove old shingles, or can they be installed over existing
Asked by: Deb
If your current shingles are in decent condition and lay flat and your plywood under the shingles is in good condition then you can install over the existing shingles. Barns and outbuildings often receive a layover. Certain home areas require removing instead of a layover. This is almost always preferred on a home.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Hunter Green We had gaf hunter green shingles installed and they had rows of dark streeks. They said let it weather for 3 months. Now after 9 months, they are still atreaked. The rep said some of the shingles released an oil. GAF will not replace these shingles. They make the house look poorly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looks great and great value! These shingles are great looking and easy to install ...... if any shingles are easy to install. If you get these shingles and need multiple bundles, check to make sure you get all bundles from the same lot number. The lot number is a six digit code stamped on the wrapper ....... usually in red ink ...... you'll have to look for it to find it. Using all shingles from the same lot will make your job easier and prevent any color changes between lots.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Timberlines I purchased these new shingles from Home Depot and the timberlines are terrible they waste so much less then comparable shingles and are more flimsy and damage easier than they used to. And to top it off six months after roof was installed they started streaking. GAf rep said they won't do anything about it.

It is hard to review a lifetime shingle, because that is really what matters. But these went on just fine, with very little waste due to damaged shingles in the bundles. If you look in my photo, you will see the roof on my house i did 2 years ago with the same shingles. The best part was doing the online order/store pickup. I ordered the shingles in the morning, and in the afternoon I picked up a pallet of shingles that was slid into the back of my pickup truck. I did not have to handle them, almost like a real lumber yard. :-)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Adds to the character of my house My roof looks beautiful,  perfect! As an older home,  the barkwood coloring & dimensionality of the shingles add to the character of my house. And they blend perfectly with my shutters. I am extremely happy with the results!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looks Great In my opinion the best looking shingle on the market. We looked at other shingles but the GAF HD is by far the nicest. We did the z ridge as well,  it just sets the house apart from the neighbors.
