Hello Lacy - this is Nancy at GE Appliances and I am happy to help you. Yes, this microwave is designed to be installed in a 30" upper cabinet space that is over-the-range. The top of the microwave must be mounted at least 66" from the floor. Please see the Installation Instructions for specific installation instructions. I hope this helps! Thanks for checking with us!

Answer:
Hi Manatee,
Model JVM3160RFSS will work fine in the space you have. A couple of things to consider is that your current model is a Cafe, so if you have Cafe Appliances in your kitchen the handles and look will be slightly different. Also model JVM3160RFSS has black accents versus grey accents. I hope this helps. Thank you for checking with us.

Answer:
A product that states it is 30 inches is often rounded up to 30 inches and is actually slightly less. This depends on the specific product so you should review specifications for the products you are interested in to find a product that will fit the space correctly. This particular product is 1/8" too large to fit in your space.

Concern over vent re-circulating air up

Looks like this unit re-circulates the air from the top of the microwave... Since the hot air will be coming out from the top of the unit, could it eventually damage the cabinets that are above the microwave?

Answer:
Hello - this is Nancy at GE and I am happy to help you. As long as your microwave is installed properly, the exhaust coming from the microwave should not hurt your cabinets. Your cabinets should be able to withstand up to 200 degrees to prevent heat damage to laminates. This is the same standard that applies to all range products. I hope this helps! Thanks for checking with us!

Yes, this unit does vent through the top. It blows directly onto my cupboards above. I've had no problem with my cabinets with this microwave (for approximately 1 year) and the previous similarly vented microwave for 14 years. It's really not a problem.

Answer:
The unit is vented out of the top of the microwave similar to a shortened dryer vent. If this isn't an option for you, I would check with your installers to come up with an alternative.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent purchase Works well. Sharp looking and efficient. Very happy with this microwave. June 24, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Flawed Design This microwave is not built to last more than a couple of years. There isn't a door latch and the door is opened by pulling on the handle. The door handle is attached to the door with two small screws thru the plastic door assembly which broke after 2 yrs. This is a design flaw that could be fixed by adding a door latch or reinforcing the plastic where the handle is attached. I called GE for a replacement part and was told the door assembly was one piece and I would have to replace it. The part was $417 plus shipping. This microwave sells for $250. Unbelievable. Very disappointed in GE and will not be purchasing anymore of their products in the future. August 23, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Very disappointed in the quality of hard, non flexible plastic parts....cracking and breaking..... I bought this microwave 2 years ago when I had Home Depot remodel my kitchen. It works like any microwave and I like how powerful the exhaust fan is, HOWEVER; The little plastic brackets that hold the handle on just cracked and broke. I also see a crack in the door plastic surrounding the window right by the bottom handle bracket. Those little plastic brackets are $30 a piece. I removed the inside door plastic trim to hopefully expose the screws that hold the handle brackets in but that did not expose the correct screws. Microwaves generally last a Looooonnnngggggggg time. The plastic on this model is substandard and it should last longer than 2 years. I generally feel I can trust GE products but with this particular product, I am VERY displeased. September 7, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by can't read the buttons This is an extremely nice microwave, good looks and easy operation.........IF you can read the buttons which I barely can. The buttons are not backlit which would mean to me that making the letters and numbers really stand out against the black is a MUST. But unfortunately the maker did not have the foresight to do this. Saw some reviews before I bought it, indicating they were a little hard to read but figured how bad could it be. Bad. I have to use magnifying glasses, turn on all the lights in the kitchen and still can barely tell what they say. It was just installed today, my first over the range microwave and I am so disappointed. And how do you return a microwave that is screwed into the wall? It can't just be lifted up and placed into a box to return. Won't buy this again. Too many others to chose from. September 2, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Terrible Experience. Don't do it! The template for the upper bolts did mark center hole. The measurements were wrong. Measure yourself, more than once, make sure they are correct and forget the template. Instructions are like someone translated them. The key pad is faint and hard to read. The alert when the food is done is not very loud. If you adjust the blower to face out toward the kitchen, when you replace the blower into the unit you will only be able to screw into one of the two holes you took out. That is not in the instructions. Don't use HD installers! My fix it guy noticed the wall mounting bracket had only two of the 4 required mounts. And they had used a wood screw instead of the required toggle bolt into drywall. This oven replaced one I used 2 minutes due to condensation. I had to replace a week old GE due to condensation. I had asked my fix it guy to drill a hole so the bolts could be sunk and that's when we learned the bracket was installed wrong. I had not removed it when I returned the oven. HD said either call GE or bring it in. When I brought it in after my neighbor uninstalled it , I was told I was to call GE. As I watched my fix it guy adjust the blower on this replacement model I recalled I did not see the HD installer do that. That was likely why I had condensation on the front of the door. GE warranty does not cover incorrect installation so I would've had to pay for it. As this saga ended I paid $100 more, bought an older, smaller version with less features, another delivery fee was waived only after I requested it, and a second installation, this time by my fix it guy. HD would not cover it. I also lost a two appliance discount even though I still bought two appliances. I"m using my great local appliance store next time. September 4, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Right for any Kitchen This 30" over-the-oven microwave is affordable, quiet, and reasonably lightweight. The only precaution I would mention relates to installation. If you are not handy, reasonably strong, or patient, it might be worth your while to have it installed. I am a hobbyist woodworker and still had difficulty getting the holes for the support screws lined up right. While the unit is not super-heavy, you will need to hold in place for a fair amount of time. YOU WILL NEED TWO PEOPLE TO INSTALL THE UNIT. It took my son-in-law and me three hours to remove the old unit and install this one, but much of that was due to the horrible way the old one had been installed. June 29, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Just Okay This microwave is just okay. I have to microwave things longer in this one than I did in my previous Kenmore microwave even though they are supposedly the same wattage. The button for the surface light is in the middle of all the other buttons instead of down at the bottom where it makes sense since it's easier to find. Would be nice if the panel lit up because the dark panel makes it hard to read the buttons. And the reflective surface on the buttons makes it even harder to read if there is any sort of glare, sunlight, overhead light, etc. So turn on the light to read the buttons only to have the light create another challenge. The ss finish gets spotted so easily it always has fingerprints; should have gone for clean steel. I think the only better thing about this microwave is the brighter surface light. August 22, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good Microwave So far, the microwave has worked well. It was a replacement for a LG microwave that only lasted a few days longer than the warrenty. The only feature I don't like is the control panel doesn't light up when a button is touched. The lettering is in grey and is hard to read in low light. Otherwise, it works as a microwave should and is reasonably good at heating things up. Good value for the money and I hope it lasts. August 9, 2016
